Boxes are versatile objects. In addition to their presentation function, we consider them exhibition spaces in their own right, where books, prints, multiples, and original works van be brought together to form a coherent whole. It is also with this in mind that we organize exhibitions featuring our boxes in the front space of our studio. A small exhibition space can contain many others.

We are currently exploring how a box can also serve as exhibition furniture, beyond the traditional portfolio or clamshell box: as a frame, base, pedestal, a podium, or even a modular combination of these. We are preparing this type of exhibition furniture in collaboration with visual artist @ivoschouten for his upcoming solo show @boox.space, which will open on 10 October. As a preview and introduction to Ivo's work, we share some preliminary sketches of the box in the making and views from his previous exhibitions @icoon_hoekvanholland.

Ivo Schouten's works move between 2D and 3D, are characterized by clear compositions and often have a modular character. Partly due to an interest in architecture and structures, spatial works or references to spatiality often arise. They are based on a clear idea of form and colour and thus frame Ivo's views, without it becoming dogmatic. In contrast to the rigid forms, there is a meticulous manual making process that shows itself in its subtlety. The different layers in the work – sleek lines, angular, open and flexible – give freedom to the viewer and form an impetus to broaden the view.

A series of triple compartment slip-in boxes with lids for a new edition of artist books made by @Annesas Appel.

Each is made to hold a collection of three pairs of books. The books protrude at the front, which makes it easy to take them out and slip them back in. The title and the name of the artist are embossed blind on the side of the lid.

The boxes are covered and lined with grey Toile du Marais.

Some overview shots of double and triple slipcases with seperate lids from a couple of recent projects.

To me, boxes have an aesthetics of their own, as objects in their own right, without their intended contents. Something like a beautiful vase without any flowers, or a bracelet that is not being worn.

A set of presentation boxes for Amsterdam-based photographer Rogier Houwen.

They are made to hold a series of prints from his project Cosmos. Rogier has chosen the 'box in a box' type, in keeping with some of his earlier work that was presented in a frame within a frame (📷 8-9).

Both boxes are covered and lined in Grége Toile du Marais from Winter & Co, with the titles hot foil printed in white.

sunday source of inspiration

Kees Visser, Monochromes ? (2022)

This sumptuously designed book presents the work and method of visual artist Kees Visser, from his early works with letters and texts, his research into form and colour, to his self-designed ‘catalogue raisonnée’ and sketchbooks, which are as much a part of his oeuvre as his completed works.

Kees Visser reinterprets the heritage of modern art, combining the languages of Mondriaan, De Stijl, and Matisse into a personal research into form and colour. For example, by introducing a diagonal edge to his paintings, Visser combines a form dear to Richard Serra with painterly experiments reminiscent of Yves Klein. He often uses the framework of a grid to determine the shape of his paintings, which is never exactly rectangular.

Book design by Irma Boom; published by nai010.
