Boxes are versatile objects. In addition to their presentation function, we consider them exhibition spaces in their own right, where books, prints, multiples, and original works van be brought together to form a coherent whole. It is also with this in mind that we organize exhibitions featuring our boxes in the front space of our studio. A small exhibition space can contain many others.
We are currently exploring how a box can also serve as exhibition furniture, beyond the traditional portfolio or clamshell box: as a frame, base, pedestal, a podium, or even a modular combination of these. We are preparing this type of exhibition furniture in collaboration with visual artist @ivoschouten for his upcoming solo show @boox.space, which will open on 10 October. As a preview and introduction to Ivo's work, we share some preliminary sketches of the box in the making and views from his previous exhibitions @icoon_hoekvanholland.

Ivo Schouten's works move between 2D and 3D, are characterized by clear compositions and often have a modular character. Partly due to an interest in architecture and structures, spatial works or references to spatiality often arise. They are based on a clear idea of form and colour and thus frame Ivo's views, without it becoming dogmatic. In contrast to the rigid forms, there is a meticulous manual making process that shows itself in its subtlety. The different layers in the work – sleek lines, angular, open and flexible – give freedom to the viewer and form an impetus to broaden the view.
