BUTNER, N.C. (AP) — H. Rap Brown, one of the most vocal leaders of the Black Power movement, has died in a prison hospital while serving a life sentence for the killing of a Georgia sheriff’s deputy. He was 82.
Brown — who later in life changed his name to Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin — died Sunday at the Federal Medical Center in Butner, North Carolina, his widow, Karima Al-Amin, said Monday.
A cause of death was not immediately available, but Karima Al-Amin told The Associated Press that her husband had been suffering from cancer and had been transferred to the medical facility in 2014 from a federal prison in Colorado.
Like other more militant Black leaders and organizers during the racial upheaval of the late 1960s and early 1970s, Brown decried heavy-handed policing in Black communities. He once stated that violence was 'as American as cherry pie.'
'Violence is a part of America’s culture,' he said during a 1967 news conference. '... America taught the black people to be violent. We will use that violence to rid ourselves of oppression, if necessary. We will be free by any means necessary.'

An intense debate inside the Israeli Knesset’s National Security Committee on Wednesday revealed details of a draft bill that would authorize the execution of Palestinian prisoners, including the use of a lethal injection and a complete ban on appeals, according to footage released by the Knesset Channel, Anadolu reports.
The committee met to prepare the bill for its second and third readings before it can become law, the channel said.
Clips posted by the channel of the heated discussion on the US social media company X showed the provisions drafted by the bill’s sponsor, the far-right Jewish Power Party led by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.
Under these provisions, the bill would apply to anyone who kills a Jew “for being Jewish,” including planning or carrying out such an act, and would mandate the death penalty as the sole punishment."

Israel is holding dozens of Palestinians from Gaza isolated in an underground jail where they never see daylight, are deprived of adequate food and barred from receiving news of their families or the outside world.
The detainees have included at least two civilians held for months without charge or trial: a nurse detained in his scrubs, and a young food seller, according to lawyers from the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel (PCATI) who represent both men.
The two men were transferred to the subterranean Rakefet complex in January, and described regular beatings and violence consistent with well-documented torture in other Israeli detention centres.
