EDIT:
Tl;dr:
FediBlock mastodon dot cloud
W E I R D
I've become aware of something, and I need to edit this to reflect that. I'm not, however, changing my story or my decision, and I am in fact even more convinced that blocking mastodon dot cloud is a good idea, now, in light of this. Someone just told me they're seeing the same message in Chrome on Android. I asked them "VPN?" and they said no, and that they get the same result with Tailscale turned on or off. I tried visiting the site outside of Tor myself, using a number of different browsers, and I got the same message again every time. Frankly, this is even more weird to me now. Why would an instance not want people to be able to look at their site in a web browser at all‽ That's definitely not suspicious. /s /s /s
I think it's relevant to mention: I made this discovery by trying to look at the original page for someone's profile, whose account is on mastodon dot cloud.
As a privacy advocate myself (putting it quite charitably, lol), my public posts here are—please sit down—public. There's actually an option on GoToSocial to have your profile show no posts whatsoever, to include public posts. So I could hide everything if I wanted to, and I don't want to. I take pride in my silly instance; I want people to see it for what is, and then cringe, in that order and not the other way around.
Whatever they're doing over there is basic Fediverse functionality, missing, on purpose.
What this post originally said, prior to this update, follows.
Defederate mastodon dot cloud if you can, or domain block them if you can't.
They, in effect, block Tor but without saying it outright. Whenever I try to visit the site via the Tor browser, it automatically redirects to a page showing a message that says "We currently do not provide services in your area." which can be found here: https://media.mastodon.cloud/cloud-093img.html
Decidedly not respecting Tor is at odds with everything that makes the Fediverse so much better than the other platforms we all left for it. Ironic case in point, Reddit, a site where I will never make an account ever again because of how bad it is, has an Onion: https://old.reddittorjg6rue252oqsxryoxengawnmo46qy4kyii5wtqnwfj4ooad.onion/
That should tell you something.
Also, before anyone asks, here's mine: http://ultracrepidarian.pz6brg4ulhwpaf7wwhlpv3ush63zpntxuswi5mxgtswe33jti6oghbqd.onion/
I expose this instance to the normal Internet via Cloudflare Tunnel and I have their "Onion routing" feature enabled. If you look at the normal site either using the Tor browser or in a Tor window in the Brave browser, you'll see the Onion offered in the URL bar.
Included are two screenshots from when I tried to access their site via Tor, from my phone and my computer respectively. Not that there's any reason why there would be, at this point, but you'll notice that no Onion is being offered in the URL bar in either screenshot, and so that is, unsurprisingly, also not an option.
There is absolutely no excuse for an instance actively preventing Tor users from accessing their site. It should probably go without saying, but you are always more than welcome to visit my site via Tor.
