I make myself realtime pskreporter-map and it's actually pretty eye-opening. For example now it seems 10m is open between Europe and Brazil/Argentina. And 15m nicely open between US-EU.

Here are yesterday's dragon fruit cuttings being prepped for planting.

I snipped the bottoms and am letting them dry up. They dry pretty quickly (as you can see in pic 2, it's already dried quite a bit), but I'm going to give it another day or two before planting.

I call it "dragon fruit alley", located near punalu'u beach on the south side of the island.

These are growing wild on both sides of the road.

I didn't see any fruit, but I did see some buds.

Dragon fruit definitely like this sunny, hot environment. They would definitely be happy with more rain, but they rot in areas with a whole lot of rain.

Pic 4: the cuttings I took. I tried to pick fat, healthy cuttings. Dragon fruit plants are pretty slow-growing so I picked some fairly robust pieces.

Pro-tip for handling dragon fruit plants: the spikes ARE sharp, so wear gloves and be careful.

The willow twigs have taken very well. I hadn't expected catkins so quickly.

Gradually, they will be knitted together to make an arch.

Change of pace, switching from the fun of the marble run to something practical, I printed these test tube holders that snap together and we’re using them to propagate various house and garden plants. I chose filament colors I already had that were complimentary to our kitchen colors. The original 3D model holds a 1” diameter test tube so I scaled its diameter down 72.6% to fit the 18x150mm test tubes I just purchased.

Solar Flares and Solar Cycle

Class-M eruptions*) affected shortwave in parts of the Philippines, India, and Hawaii on Wednesday and on Thursday, according to „Prensa Bolivariana“, a pro-Maduro website or blog. Quoting a channel named „Earthsky“, it also notes that more flares may be expected, but not necessarily with much effect on communications.

According to the same article, the current solar activity peak is expected to be reached some time during the first three quarters of 2025.

Tomatoes and tomatillo thinned to one, and the 2024 Gravenstein scion wood rooting attempt had lots of leaf. I put a little rooting hormone in the water but it's old so I've ordered some new. The cuttings are bagged and off to the side so they're not getting full light.

They are in a plastic lidded container that has a hole cut in the lid and it has water in it. They had been stored in moist sealed bags in a refrigerator and the ends were callused up so it's possible they will make roots.

Making more clones of the two condemned trees damaging our foundation. I think it's a blue spruce.

Last winter I did two pots of these, in an experiment. The ones with torn off twigs didn't seem to root so well, the cut ones did.

This time I got some rooting hormone to try and see if that accelerates things a little. Of course it's now also spring.

That way the trees can live on, planted anew, further out in the garden.

An old wooden table. On it are a big green flowerpot, some spruce twigs, some tools, a small plastic can with the lid open and a large water bottle cut open sideways with drain holes stabbed in the bottom. It contains wet potting soil and densely staked spruce twigs.

The twigs have very sharp needles and come from a tree with blue tips and tall and narrow cones.

Gravenstein scion wood from 2024 that's been in the refrigerator. I saw a forum post mentioning they had some old scion wood that was callused up so I went and looked at mine and some of it was callused up so I stuck it in some water and put a bag over it the other day. It was already leafed out and I didn't expect those to turn green but they did. Wait and see if the callus grows roots.

A photo showing 4 pieces of apple scion wood that is in water with the intention that it makes roots from the calluses that have formed from being in cold storage for more than a year. There are green shoots coming out of the buds with small leaves.

An air layering attempt on the old Santa Rosa plum. Harvested the sphagnum moss from the rock seen in the background. Now we wait.

Yes, I could just buy another Santa Rosa plum but then it's not THIS plum. This also ignores the fact that the chances of getting the same plum is near zero because "looks like" is more important than "actually is" in the buy a plant world these days.

A photo showing a small limb on a plum tree that has had a blob of plastic and rubber added to it. What created this was freshly harvested sphagnum moss mixed with some dirt that came along with it and a little dirt and wood ash, then soaked in water. This was secured around the de-barked limb with some narrow plastic wrap and then it was covered with some wide plastic wrap to make 3 layers. The top and bottom was sealed with some splicing tape. The whole thing wrapped tight with narrow wrap, then more splicing tape on the ends. The goal is to retain the moisture of the sphagnum moss for a couple of months if it takes that long.

So 'ohi'a lehua (cornerstone species on this island, sick with rapid 'ohi'a death, slow-growing, dominant canopy tree at my place) is known to be quite difficult to propagate.

They produce loads of tiny, airborne seeds, but they kind of need to land in the right medium to take off.

An ag person who has grown it before once recommended that I do a little pot of soil, top it with living moss, and sprinkle a lot of seeds on top of the moss. I did it one year, 0 sprouts.

Interestingly, as I was taking apart a rotten roof section yesterday, I noticed that one of the rotting 2x4's had loads of 'ohi'a seedlings growing with orchids in little pockets of moss that were growing on the side of the wood. 10 feet in the air!

I left them all on the wood and set it down in a shady spot. Unfortunately pig came last night and turned it over, but I turned it back up in the morning. I hope these little guys go! I would love to have a way to propagate 'ohi'a!!!

Pic 1 shows the largest seedling on the 2x4, and pics 2 and 3 show the other moss/orchid clumps with smaller seedlings. Pic 4 shows the entire 2x4 on the ground, while it was still attached to the roof section. You can see the moss clumps on the side of it.
