This weekend was a little meh on 10 meters. The propagation was just not there really, and I only managed to get 3 SSB contacts. The rest are all FT8/FT4, and ehh. Even that was slow. Hopefully whatever is going on with the atmosphere clears up for next weekend.

Everyone wants to find a way to propagate the ecologically important Hawai'i native tree 'ohi'a lehua (metrosideros polymorpha), but 'ohi'a lehua knows exactly where it wants to grow: 15 feet in the air, on top of a shipping container in the jungle, on the rotting 2x4 holding some solar panels. Just LOOK at how many 'ohi'a keiki were growing out of @saltphoenix 's solar setup:

(FYI, I gently pulled them out - along with their clumps of moss and leaf litter - and @saltphoenix and I split them between ourselves so we could both try to grow them down here on the ground 😅)

REE Chinese had only rebroadcast their September 1 program seven days later, on September 8, but last night, September 15, they carried something new: a program on southern Spain, mainly about Andalusia, its history and some folk customs, and a short portrait of Andalusia-born singer JoaquĂ­n Sabina.

And while the first two once-a-week transmissions were disappointing, this one is really the kind of programs that I had hoped for.

What is missing is the news, but it probably wouldn’t make much sense to include those in a service that only airs once a week.

And they still haven’t posted the podcast of this latest program, although it has probably been ready since Saturday. đŸ€Š That’s so much the worse as shortwave propagation on the higher frequencies was bad last night (Sept 15). For a variety of reasons, this program probably didn’t have as many listeners as it could have had, and as it would deserve.

This Weekend’s Music Garden & Propagation Outlook

Canada

Pop Shop Radio airs via Winsen on the Aller, Germany, on 6160 kHz from 14:00 to 15:00 UTC, and via Channel 292 (state of Bavaria, probably also Germany) on 9670 kHz from 22:00 to 23:00 UTC. A number of transmissions can also be heard via WRMI, FL, USA.

Finland

One station – Scandinavian Weekend Radio – on the air (on Saturday), one – Realmix – taking an autumn break.

United Kingdom

Radio Six will be on shortwave via Channel 292, on 9670 kHz from 21:00 to 22:00 UTC. Tony Currie is scheduled to play sophisticated sounds for late listening, from the Great Music Garden, Lismore, Scotland.

Also from Scotland, via Channel 292 in Germany and WRMI in the United States, Radio Tumbril can be heard with its program of classical music – click the following links for times, frequencies, and the current playlist.

Propagation Outlook

High-frequency propagation remains generally good, writes the Radio Society of Great Britain, but "[n]ext week NOAA predicts the solar flux index will decline to 160, and then perhaps 125. Unsettled geomagnetic conditions are forecast until the 10 September, with a maximum Kp index of 4 predicted".

Stockholm Radio shouldn’t be read as a general propagation forecaster, but as one that describes HF communications from various parts of the world with the Swedish service provider’s high-powered transmitters and receivers [
], all situated in Sweden. You can see the difference, depending on distance, when comparing places like Copenhagen and Calcutta.

This tutorial might help to understand the criteria that define good or bad propagation conditions.
General rules are that a high solar flux and a low KP index are best for shortwave reception. A solar flux from 80 to 110 counts as average, and KPIs from 0 to 3 count as really calm (and therefore good for high frequency signals).

Welp, this weekend was a total win on FT8 10 meters. I'm guessing with the solar storm that's doing it's thing, it made things wacky, 'cause I've not seen propagation like this from Western PA before. The EU was like wide open for me, and boy did I do my best to take advantage of it! 170 FT8 exchanges in total for the 3 day weekend. Phew!

I've put 2 pictures up this time, because otherwise things would have just been too muddled together. (I added the all-together map too, just for comparison) So here, enjoy checking out where I managed to exchange with at just 100 watts!
