@audubonballroon I really hope they don't get away with all that #gerrymandering, but as a European my deeper thought is: proportional representation (perhaps paired with districting like in Germany) would solve this problem once and for all. If you ever wanna play offence and try taking your #democracy forward rather than just trying to preserve the flawed system you have from "conservative" attacks, I recommend #proportionalRepresentation!

I’m happier than I look here after the great conversation we had last Friday with our MP and Minister for Crown Indigenous Relations, Rebecca Alty. We talked about the nation building potential of #ProportionalRepresentation and the urgent need to diffuse partisan tension in #canada by moving ahead with the citizens’ assembly on electoral reform, part of the official liberal party platform on which they were reelected. Somehow everyone managed to smile at the right moment except me.

Palestine Action “not close” to terror group, Scottish board found

A #Scottish counter-terrorism board found that #PalestineAction’s activities fell below the threshold to be considered #terrorism before the group were banned by #Labour, The National can reveal.

It appears that #Police #Scotland concluded the group’s activity was well below the terrorism threshold.

A new and detailed analysis by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences recommends that we expand the U.S. House of Representatives by 150 members and elect them through Proportional Ranked Choice Voting.

"On balance, more proportional systems provide:

better public health outcomes, across a number of measures
lower levels of economic inequality
higher satisfaction with democracy
higher levels of subjective well-being."

The Academy was established during the American Revolution by John Adams and of bunch of founding father guys. They probably know a few things about #democracy.

Whether you support #Prop50 or oppose it, hopefully we can all agree this is a very stupid system. #Gerrymandering is only possible because we use single-member winner-take-all legislative districts. Most representative democracies use multi-member districts and #ProportionalRepresentation to elect their legislatures. Those systems are impossible to gerrymander, and they guarantee representation for different parties in proportion to their share of the vote.
