My brilliant friend Maria Cuellar is giving the plenary talk at #ACIC next year!!

She’s not on here but if you’re into #statistics, #forensics, or #PublicPolicy you need to read her work.

I’m so excited for her and for me getting to hear her!

In this newly published 'short communication' to the Future Healthcare Journal, we argue that the status of artificial light at night as "a pollutant with adverse human and environmental effects" means we should take it seriously as a #PublicHealth issue.

"If we include the known adverse effects of #ALAN on other planetary species and the climate, as well as the financial impact of in the form of energy waste, surely it makes sense to only use ALAN where evidence shows it can have a positive impact. Just like passive exposure to smoking, will we have to wait another 50 years before we recognise that we could and *should* have done something about this earlier?"

why do we not habitually highlight the discrepancy bw right-wing assholes who question climate science and vaccine safety?

so when julie sladden for example flies into canberra ask her about whether she relieved to have landed in one piece, she must be a bit skeptical about bernoullli's theorum and how the fuck do magnets work anyhow

does she understand how her iphone works? is it friendly relay spirits in the sky how the fuck does she get off throwing shade on vaccine science if she's not terrified of being at 30,000 feet

this is the job of journalism surely

A quotation from Molly Ivins

Seems to me it’s a simple concept — the concentration of wealth is a Bad Idea. Since capital tends to concentrate, it is one of the functions of government to oppose this tendency. That’s why we used to have antimonopoly laws and the like.
When you see government encouraging the concentration of wealth, check your wallet.

Molly Ivins (1944-2007) American writer, political columnist [Mary Tyler Ivins]
Essay (1991-02), “Season of Drear,” The Progressive

A quotation from Abraham Lincoln

The true rule, in determining to embrace, or reject any thing, is not whether it have any evil in it; but whether it have more of evil, than of good. There are few things wholly evil, or wholly good. Almost every thing, especially of governmental policy, is an inseparable compound of the two; so that our best judgment of the preponderance between them is continually demanded.

Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) American lawyer, politician, US President (1861-65)
Speech (1848-06-20), “Internal Improvements,” US House of Representatives, Washington, D. C.

When a leader needs to consolidate power, they often find a scapegoat. A new TIME article delves into how the demonization of immigrants serves this exact purpose, acting as a distraction from real policy failures and uniting people through manufactured fear. This is a critical historical pattern worth understanding.

The scientific community is sounding the alarm over a new executive order that puts political appointees in charge of federal research grants. This move bypasses the long-standing peer-review system, raising fears that funding will be based on ideology rather than scientific excellence. This is a critical development for the future of open and unbiased research.
