I wasn't in a summit or in a park, but still brought the HT to chase a friend on a peak. Two meter CW is a lot of fun!

Pleasant weather forecast had me up Bredon Hill for a SOTA activation after work. Had to keep it quick as turned out I needed to get back for a family commitment. 2M yielded zilch. Swift run on 20M CW with the AX1 got it done.

First #SOTA for a while. I was rusty. It was dreamy! My daughter came along and the sun shone! Fan Brycheiniog GW/SW-003.
Dozen or so contacts on 20M and 40M #MorseCode .
Tried my #Quansheng #UVK5 for the first time, worked great. Think it will be good for my lower cost activating kit. Especially when I’ve changed the firmware to get #Morsecode on 2M.

Did a VHF only activation of Mt Umunhum, W6/CC-052, this morning on my run. Got QSOs on 2m FM, CW, and SSB, and three summit to summit contacts.

As someone who speaks some Chinese, the way #AmateurRadio people pronounce #Quansheng, #Baofeng, etc., is kinda painful

I just got my Quansheng TK-11 in the mail today. Initial thoughts that aren’t covered in any unboxing videos:

There was a power adapter taped to the inner box. The charging dock has an Asian power plug. Fortunately, I can charge it via USB-C.

This isn’t as heavy as my Motorola XTS 1500, but this has enough heft to be used as a bludgeoning weapon.

I love the circular lanyard connector!

I hate how fragile the rubber port covers are.

The T-shaped antenna is meant for the LF/MF/HF bands, but it has “0.153-18 MHz” stamped on it, so you won’t need it for anything about 17 meters. Set it aside. The rubber duck is very long.

On that note, you do know this can only transmit FM, right? You read the website before clicking Buy, didn’t you? That limits you to 10 meters and up.

It can receive CW on 2200 meters. Fat lot of good that does when you can’t transmit that low.

If you had told me this is my UV-K5 with the Ezgumer firmware, I would have believed you. It’s virtually identical, down to the fonts and screen layout. The blue backlight is your only clue.

Dear lord, the CPS is awful. It’s perfectly cromulent, but it’s missing simple things like copy and paste. That means if you want to insert a channel, you need to edit every single one below that.

The radio can receive on 33 cm and maybe 23 cm, but the CPS won’t let you program frequencies above 600 MHz.

Someone opened a ticket with CHIRP to support this model. They’re working on it. GOOD!

No programming cable is included, but your Baofeng one works fine.

Nothing like a Chinese-to-North American power adapter taped to the box to inspire confidence. A white AC plug adapter is stuck to a cardboard box using packing tape. Fortunately, the device in the box can charge with USB-C, so I don’t need to use this.

Inside the Quansheng UV-K5 stock antenna.
Was given an extra, so I pulled it open to see how this particular one was made.
Interesting to see a PCB instead of just a cap.
And it as space for two SMD caps.

Briefly tried the #Quansheng (IJV Firmware) for #2MetreTuesday last night, but listening to its output on another radio, heard an odd “ringing”. It keyed OK but didn’t entirely stop emitting a weak carrier in between dits/dahs. I wondered whether STE caused this, turned it off, little change. Any ideas? #HamRadio

Does anyone have a view on what is the best external speaker/mic with a Kenwood K1 for a #Baofeng or #Quansheng radio? A relatively inexpensive one - I know there’s a Kenwood KMC-45D but it’s a tad pricey (although probably very good). #HamRadio

2025-04-12

While testing the #Quansheng with IJV 3 firmware, on FM, the external speaker mic’s PTT didn’t work. The mic is good on other handhelds. Either the Quansheng has a fault, or the IJV f/w has a fault.. never tested this handset with an external mic prior to flashing. Or perhaps there’s a setting to enable it that I haven’t found?

2025-04-07

Wow, the latest IJV firmware for the #Quansheng UV-K5(8) is incredible! It Has A Bazillion Options(tm)! What would be even more awesome is Quansheng seeing what what’s been facilitated here, and producing an open handheld of a little higher spec, with switchable band filters and PA that gives a good output at HF too. They could OWN #HamRadio with that.

Some more Quansheng TK-11 images dropped.
This time of the internals.
The images seem to be of the triband TK-11(8).
Thanks for Dimitar Milkov for bringing these images to my attention and Silent YANG for taking them.

Honestly, that was to be expected. 🦆cheng must have noticed what people were doing with their radios and what functions they were adding with both software AND hardware mods... so here they come up with an official product incorporating all of them! BRING IT ON! 🔥🔥🔥 #Quacheng #Quansheng #Kwaczeng

New #Quansheng announced.
10m/6m/2m/70cm Quadband with 0.5 - 1160MHz wide receive. AMF/FM/SSB receive and likely only FM TX, like usual.
Also 6m/2m/70cm tribander with the same wide RX.
Sadly no #23cm even on receive.
Will be interesting to see what price point these end up on.

Nice little 2m CW QSO today to a friend on Mt St Helena. Close to line of sight, but a few mountains in the way. 🤷‍♂️ Quansheng to Quansheng!
