Some more good news...

@QubesOS is now graciously funding further development of Wyng, with the expressed goal of eventually integrating fast & secure Wyng backups into Qubes OS. This next stage of Wyng development will focus on a raft of features from the v0.9 roadmap that enhance convenience and user-friendliness, such as resuming interrupted backup sessions and direct cloud storage support.

Many thanks to the Qubes OS team for recognizing the advantages Wyng brings and for their support!

🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

About:

Wyng is a backup system optimized for Linux copy-on-write (lvm-thin and Btrfs). Qubes OS is the hypervisor-based, reasonably secure desktop operating system: qubes-os.org/

I'm looking for virtualization-based desktop Linux setup

I love virtualization in Linux and I would like to have operating system which will work only as minimal, air-gapped as much is possible host for my guest operating systems. Qubes OS project really interested me but it’s based on Xen hypervisor so it might cause troubles with GPU Passthrough which is really important for me also I’m more interested in KVM. In my case it’s not only about security and privacy but also about fun and learning. What can you recommend? I think that good choice might be Gentoo Linux because it allows for minimal installation and remove unnecessary software like CUPS, Bluetooth entirely with flags which will be great option for host only OS. But I had experience with Gentoo and it’s not easiest way 😅 Debian might be easier option but I will have less control over my system. Maybe you have other interesting options?

i'm eyeing it as a potential tool to improve the system monitoring tooling for qubes os. at the moment we have.... xl top. that's about it

pcp is nice because it's lightweight, is available in standard fedora/debian repos, and supports monitoring hosts over sockets which is perfect for qubes

the problem is reporting. like i said, they pretty much only suggest grafana, and that's far too heavy for running on a qubes workstation

#Whonix got a new release, version 18.

I wondered if I would need to reinstall everything. Then I found whonix.org/wiki/Release_Upgrad and that "release-upgrade"-command for the workstation worked like a charm!

Unfortunately my modified(!) Gateway failed, it gives me a black screen after login --> I will install a new instance.

This is a "standalone" installation on #Proxmox #PVE, some #QubesOS instances will wait for the official announcement, which is not available yet.

Thank you, @whonix

Neat. Turns out that addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firef is a pretty nice frontend for generating configuration to feed to mozilla.github.io/policy-templ

Why would you want to? Because it allows you to force load from the side a set of preferences and extensions. For your own use, or give to others.

Also, works great for #QubesOS #DispVM config where the VM gets recreated every time 😂

For everyone who thinks #QubesOS is a #Linux :D Qubes OS is not itself a Linux operating system or a hypervisor alone; it is a full security-focused desktop operating system that is built on top of the Xen hypervisor. Qubes OS uses Xen (a Type 1 or bare-metal hypervisor) to manage and isolate various virtual machines (called "qubes") that run different operating systems (such as Fedora or Debian Linux, or even Windows) within their own separate environments.

@Kroc I don't use products / .

I do however use format apps, have used OS's as well as at times.

There's reasons why they exist and people use them.

I think it's a bit alarmist to think someday you won't be able to run apps without containers or VMs because flatpaks exist but i'm guessing this probably isn't going to be agreed upon.

If you are wanting to try out , i'd recommend checking out the FAQ, forum and especially the HCL to give you some idea of whether or not or how well your particular hardware may work with it.

DJ Ware has recently released a video for those who may have heard of but never really looked into it as well as those who haven't and may have some interest in something more secure than what other distros offer.

Thinking of my recent experiments with #QubesOS that I did before reinstalling with #NixOS, maybe it would be worth going back to it and really just having the Intel Arc A380 PCIe passed through into a Qube. I could have Dom0 accessible over the IPMI exclusively and do everything within a Qube. That way I could also more easily reboot into e.g. a Windows Qube for gaming and wouldn't have to deal with working out the quirks steam on ArchLinux ./. NixOS has...

Weird. I had a sys-vpn on #QubesOS based on @solene guide. It worked for over a year, then suddenly stopped. It would connect to the VPN but I couldn't even ping a domain. I gave up on it for a while.

Today, since I have nothing else to do, I went through the guide again and double checked everything. Turns out adding the line to adjust the MTU solved the problem. Go figure.

All right. Time to upgrade my #QubesOS #Debian template to 13. Wish me luck.

2025-10-31

Today, my girlfriend is moving in. That's exciting and whatever, but #QubesOS announced #Debian 13 templates are available.

Wow is #QubesOS 4.2.4 slow. I've installed it on a server with dual EPYC CPU, 512 GB RAM, and a 4TB NVMe and it is soo slow think I'll just reinstall with something else and check back in with it in another few years from now...
