Radio Propagation
A severe lightning storm over SW France is causing a lot of static on the HF bands tonight.
Radio Propagation
A severe lightning storm over SW France is causing a lot of static on the HF bands tonight.
Radio Propagation
Sporadic-E: High MUF across Europe
The MUF (maximum useable frequency) has been above 70 MHz most of the afternoon, and is now rising to 100MHz and more on the west.
Summer Solstice Radio Propagation
Sporadic-E: We have a high MUF (maximum useable frequency) over the south-east and east Europe now >144 MHz.
Areas of high ionization (sporadic-E "clouds") will tend to drift westwards with the sun during the day.
Although not directly driven by the Sun’s position, Sporadic-E activity in the northern hemisphere typically peaks in the weeks surrounding the summer solstice. The northern hemisphere also usually sees a smaller winter peak lasting up to a few days in late December or January.
Radio Propagation
Sporadic-E: Very high MUF over central Europe continuing. 70 MHz and 144 MHz contacts are being widely reported.
FM Band 2 is also wide open.
Radio Propagation
Some odd stuff happening at the bottom end of the FM band...
Radio Propagation
A screen capture from FMList.org showing where FM reception reports linking Tx to Rx are crossing over and near Luxembourg, more or less pinpointing a stronger cloud of sporadic-E ionization. The actual midpoint on the great circle path is a little further north.
I'm currently hearing FM stations from Budapest here in SW England.
Radio Propagation
Capture from FM list showing FM reception reports via sporadic-E propagation in the last 15 minutes.
Radio Propagation
High MUF across Europe, exceeding 144 MHz in places. Croatian and Hungarian FM is being heard in the UK.
Good to strong tropo conditions are also continuing.
Radio Propagation
A spot of DAB radio DXing, listening to the transmitters across the English Channel over in Brittany. Who remembers "Allouette" on the dial on the old radio sets?
Radio Propagation
Ship and coast AIS signals are propagating well under the tropo conditions this evening.
Radio Propagation
High MUF across Europe, in addition to good tropo conditions.
Radio Propagation
High pressure over northern Europe and the UK is allowing for enhanced tropo conditions, extending VHF & UHF signals beyond the normal range.
Here we see AIS signals on 162 MHz being received in Plymouth from the Bay of Biscay. Shannon coastguard is being received via coastal repeaters in SW England, and FM from France is also strong.
Radio Propagation
With only four days to the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere, trans-Atlantic propagation on 6m is holding up well late into the evening.
Radio Propagation
Sporadic-E: High MUF currently just south of France in the north-western Mediterranean Sea.
Radio Propagation
Night-time sporadic-E: The MUF is high across Europe. I'm hearing FM from Croatia HRT on various frequencies.
Thunderstorms are also causing a lot of static noise on HF across Europe this evening, and locally on VHF if they're nearby. Around 3,000 strikes/hour are being detected on Blizortung!
Radio Propagation
Sporadic-E: The MUF is high in places over Europe (>144 MHz). Paths are open between UK and Iberia/Canaries.
Tropo: Tropospheric propagation is also good in places across Europe.
HF conditions are reasonable globally, although the lower frequencies have been struggling a bit on the night-side.
Radio Propagation
Sporadic-E: The MUF is above 144 MHz in parts of Europe.
Radio Propagation
The lower HF bands are receiving a lot of QRN from lightning storms over NW Iberia this evening. These storms will drift northward in a hot "Spanish Plume" towards the UK tomorrow and Thursday.
