This is a black and white street photo in portrait format of a stationary San Francisco cable car (2012).

The camera is directed along a straight and wide city street. Below the centre of the image is an iconic San Francisco cable car, stationary, in the middle of the street and at the start of the line. The cable car car is viewed from the front (or perhaps the rear?) (When it gets to the end of the line the driver gets out of the front goes to the rear and doubles back in reverse, though on a parallel track). The cable car is all wood above the metal chassis. On the lower part of the front/back are the words - 'Van Ness Ave California & Market Streets'. Above, are three rectangular windows with a slightly arched roof above. It's a month before Christmas and there is tinsel around the edge of the roof. On either side of the cable car is the usual assortment of city traffic. On either side of the street are the bottom few floors of various high-rise buildings. In the distance, about half a km, the street climbs steeply with the summit being just short of the top of the image, a little strip of white sky is visible in that gap. Where the road climbs so steeply, the two parallel sets of tracks can be seen clearly in the middle of the street.

The location: California Street at the junction with Market Street, looking west, in San Francisco's Business district.

UP EMD/MK/Sulzer SD45M
This was shot at Summit, CA, on Cajon Pass, on a trip in the early 80's (likely 1982) to Eagle Mountain. It is a pure luck shot of a UP Sulzer on the point of a train at Summit. The man getting off is a (surprise) mechanic.
UP 60 was an EMD SD45, UP Designation EMD/Morrison Knudsen SD45M. Reportedly, it was built in 1968 by EMD as UP 3634 an SD45, builders number 33443, from UP series 3600-3649. It was renumbered UP 34 in 1978. It was rebuilt in 1980, equipped with a Sulzer 16ASV25R-30 engine and 62:15 gear ratio. Union Pacific called these units SD45Ms. Morrison Knudsen used TE83-6S. It was retired in 1983.

At 7:41 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, then new BNSF 6581, 6583, 5136, 4009, 5604 and 5035 led a southbound manifest out of Caliente, CA. They were approaching Tunnel 1 in the Tehachapi mountains.
BNSF 6581 is a GE ES44C4. Reportedly: it was built in 2013, serial number 61494.

At 8:38 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2013, in Barstow, CA, BNSF 5261 was leading a 4+0 (5261, 4342, 4320, 5430) eastbound intermodal train onto the Needles Subdivision. Behind it a westbound 5+0 (BNSF 6836, 4014, NS 2583, 724wb, 960) manifest was heading in the other direction.
BNSF 5261 is a GE C44-9W. Reportedly: it was built in 2002 serial number 53755.

At 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2013, in Barstow, CA, near where East Tower once was, an eastbound BNSF Auto Racks (6778, 7501) started it's journey onto the Needles Subdivision.
BNSF 6778 is a GE ES44C4. Reportedly: it was built in 2011 builder's number 60448.

This is a black and white photo of a railway track leading to an old steel bridge spanning a river. Tempe, Arizona (2012).

The camera is centred between the rail tracks, looking along them and just above the track bed. The tracks are supported by very weathered, dark wood sleepers (railroad ties) that are buried in a bed of gravel ballast that spans outwards from the sleeper for about a metre. The top of the rails are bright silver suggesting the track is well used. To the left of the track is a long fence consisting of black metal posts and three lengths of wire. In the near distance, about 10m away, is a steel through-truss bridge that spans a river, now dammed and repurposed as a lake. The bridge is old, dark, near black, with multiple girders and rivets. On the top horizontal span are the numbers '1912' cut from the steel. Where the bridge starts are two lengths of rails inside the main track, 'Inner Guard Rails' placed to stop a derailed train from striking the bridge and falling from the tracks. To the right, about 10m away, is a parallel, modern light railway bridge with power cables suspended overhead. Above is a sky overexposed to pure white, devoid of any detail.

In 2020 a freight train did derail, strike the bridge, destroying part of the bridge, fell from the embankment and onto the ground below the spilling 2200 gallons of toxic liquid, the inner guard rails were not placed correctly.

Colfax station

Colfax station is an Amtrak train station in Colfax, California. Served by the California Zephyr, it is unstaffed. The station was built in 1905 by the Southern Pacific Railroad and was restored in the early 21st century; in addition to a waiting room, the building also houses the Colfax Heritage Museum. The platform is movable to accommodate Union Pacific rotary snowplows, which are liable to scrape a platform eight inches above top of rail.
The first station built on the site opened around 1865. The Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad began service from here on April 11, 1876, running until 1942. The modern station was built in 1905.

The California Zephyr is a long-distance passenger train operated by Amtrak between Chicago and the San Francisco Bay Area (at Emeryville), via Omaha, Denver, Salt Lake City, and Reno. At 2,438 miles (3,924 km), it is Amtrak's longest daily route, and second-longest overall after the Texas Eagle's triweekly continuation from San Antonio to Los Angeles, with travel time between the termini taking approximately 52 1⁄2 hours. Amtrak claims the route as one of its most scenic, with views of the upper Colorado River valley in the Rocky Mountains, and the Sierra Nevada. The modern train is the second iteration of a train named California Zephyr; the original train was privately operated and ran on a different route through Nevada and California.
