Today's historic photo of the day: A view looking along a deserted platform 10 at Sydney Terminal station, Sydney, February 2 1985.

Note the pair of lamps sitting on the ground at right. Whilst oil lamps had been widely used since the coming of the #Railways, by this time, marker lights on trains were electric. Were these two specimens relics or would oil lamps really have still been used in 1985? Perhaps they were more modern versions fitted with battery electric lights.

A black and white photo taken looking along a passenger platform at a city terminal station. Tracks are at the left with buffers at the end in front of the transverse concourse behind. At right, a wooden awning covers the platform on which we are standing. The end of the awning is decorated by downward pointing pickets or daggers, and a large number 10 is displayed on the fascia to denote the platform number. At bottom right, two portable lamps are sitting on the platform. Lamps like this, fuelled by oil, paraffin or kerosine, were used from the dawn of railways until the early 1970s. Were oil lamps still really in use in 1985 - or were these perhaps relics? Could these have been more modern battery electric versions?

When it was first built, the Spencer St bridge was supposed to carry a rail bridge.

It would have been part of a North–South link connecting the Hurstbridge and Upfield lines to the St Kilda and Port Melbourne lines, without passing through Flinders St. #Melbourne #train #rail #railways #trains
