Latest #Ramblers magazine has an item on the number of stiles on #PublicRightsOfWay in England and Wales. They used #FreedomofInformation requests, presumably from each Highway Authority, for the data. Grand total comes to around 140,000, or around 1 per mile of PRoW.

#OpenStreetMap has just over 82,000 as of today (#OverpassTurbo query: overpass-turbo.eu/s/2cFH). Not all of these will be on public rights of way, but between 50 and 60% of the total isn't bad. (Wales only represents ~5-6%).

Another Bridgend Ramblers walking making use of Pencoed Footpath 5 running from Hendre, south of the M4 to Woodlands Fields. Access was a bit of a challenge with two stiles not making things easy for walkers. #Ramblers #Access #RightsOfWay #Footpaths #Hendre #Pencoed #Walking #Wales #Cymru

Walkers striding down into the valley from HendrePencoed Footpath 5 route (enlarge to see the detail)One of the stiles that was difficult to climb over. IT wasn't wide enough, there was barbed wire and the standing plank was at the wrong angle meaning you had to be a gymnast to safely pass.Struggling to get over the stile with the walkers due to barbed wire and a very wobbly stile.

They don't make walking books like this any more - another beautifully hand illustrated book of walks, Rambler's Cheviots, written by Bernard and Babs Hiley, and illustrated by Betty Fletcher, first published 1969

#Northumberland #Hiking #Ramblers

front cover of the book "ramblers' cheviot" over a colourful 1970s photograph of a rocky stream running under a rickety footbridge somewhere in the Northumbrian Hills. There's no other text on the cover.A hand-drawn in map of the Cheviots featuring 12 walking routes. Around the map in the centre, the walks are listed on the left, in very neat handwriting, while on the right are a simple Key, the two OS 1:50,000 maps needed, and a list of "Some useful motor roads into the Cheviots"part of "Walk 6", pages 42 and 43. This part of the walk is described in neat handwriting filling both pages, interspersed with 4 ink vignettes of the walk.

The first is the route along the Hawsen Burn, the second is a view of The Cheviot, the third is of a figure stood next to East Cairn, and the final is unmistakable summit Trig Point on top of the Cheviot, stood on a solid tussock and surrounded by the infamous sucking bog that covers the Cheviot Summit"Walk 8" pages 58 and 59. The handwritten walk description has three small ink drawings. The first is a hillside with sheep and a farmhouse, Alnham-moor.
The second is the Bridge of the Breamish near Linhope, a small bridge with a figure leaning over and contemplating the stream.
The third and largest is of a figure in a headscarf holding a flask, sat under the beautiful Linhope Spout waterfall.

In England there is a law that says that if you don’t walk on country paths for a year, a farmer who owns that piece of land can close the path. Ramblers keep such paths open. They plan which paths they wish to cover every year, and they do so systematically. Usually, a local authority helps them by recording the paths and the ramblers’ walks and negotiating with farmers if any trouble should arise at any point.

Made the most of the fine weather in Abergavenny after a Ramblers Cymru meeting and went exploring. The town is almost entirely surrounded by mountains and hills; Blorenge Sugar Loaf & Skirrid Fawr among them. #BannauBrycheiniog #Ramblers #SaturdayFun #Monmouthshire #Abergavenny #Cymru #Wales #SirFynwy #Blorenge #SugarLoaf #SkiridFawr #BannauBrycheiniogNationalPark

Migratory children living in "Rambler's Park." They have lived on the road for three years. Nine children in the family. Yakima Valley, Washington

#Ramblers #YakimaValley #Washington

loc.gov/pictures/item/20177726

In the image, there are two children standing in front of a cluttered truck. The truck is parked on a dirt ground and appears to be filled with various items that are not organized neatly. To the right of the truck, there's a tent pitched on the same dirt ground. Surrounding the area, there are some trees in the background and a body of water visible behind them, although it's not clear what type of water it is from this angle. The children seem to be interacting with each other. The scene suggests a temporary living situation or perhaps travelers resting on their journey.

A big turn out on the Ramblers walk today with around 25 completing the circular walk out of Llantwit Major, to Marcross following the coast path back. Plenty of stiles and hazy far reaching views across the Vale and sea. #Seaviews #LlanilltudFawr #Geology #Wales #Cymru #Ramblers #Marcross #Vale #LlantwitMajor #Cerdded
