Interesting history of Rancho Palos Verdes. Most of the population growth there was AFTER the landslides of 1950, based on this history. And, people sued to build NEW HOMES ON THE LANDSLIDE

Tidbits: "..On April 1, 1950, the Palos Verdes Peninsula had about 6,500 residents, and by June 1967, the number of residents had grown to approx. 54,000..."

On October 1, 2008, the State Appeals Court reversed a lower court decision and decided that the Land Slide building moratorium ordinance of the City of Rancho Palos Verdes for the Portuguese Bend area constituted an unconstitutional “taking” of property, and that the City should issue building permits to property owners wishing to build homes in the area.”A permanent ban on home construction cannot be based merely on a fear of personal injury or significant property damage,” the jurist concluded, and ordered the case remanded for further proceedings to determine an appropriate remedy. On October 8th, 2008, the City Council decided to appeal this decision to the State Supreme Court.On Wednesday December 17th, 2008, the California State Supreme Court denied the City of Rancho Palos Verdes appeal of the Appelate Court’s decision allowing homeowners in the Portuguest Bend landslide moratorium zones the right to develop their properties.

Interesting story on someone in Rolling Hills (farther away from the Portuguese Bend landslide) who has a giant crack in his property which is getting larger. I wonder really how much of that hills is hoofing it down to the Pacific Ocean.

**I don't know the fix (probably, help everyone move and condemn the whole area of residential housing), but that is $$$ for managed retreat and we haven't figured out (as a society) how to deal with someone owning property which is clearly going to be destroyed by natural forces, but is "their property" (in many cases, paid off mortgage, etc.)
