Alexander Herd was a neighbour to the Hearns in Three Mile Cross in the 1920s.

Looking through some archives, Alex, as he was apparently known, was born in nearby Grazeley in August 1878 to Alexander, a shoemaker originally from Chelsea, and Caroline, from Brompton.

Census returns show him as being a tin worker and, latterly, a builder's labourer. He was married to Elizabeth, and had a son, Arthur, who was a gardener at University College, Reading.

#OnThisDay 99 years ago, 13 June 1926, Alex went out on his motorbike, Arthur riding pillion. "As he emerged from a lane into the main road, apparently going towards Twyford [on the London Road, east Reading], he came into collision with another motorcycle proceeding in the opposite direction."

Both motorcyclists and their pillion passengers were thrown from their bikes, with Arthur and the other passenger being seriously injured whilst the other biker was able to go home the same day. Alex, however, sustained a fractured skull and died from his injuries that night. He was 47 years old.

This photo, taken a few days later, shows the horse-drawn hearse being loaded with his flower-covered coffin outside his home in Church Lane, Three Mile Cross.

When the inquest into Alex's death was opened three days after he died, Arthur was still in a "semi-conscious and serious condition". I'm pleased to say, though, that he recovered and went on to live until the age of 76, passing in 1983.

Quotes taken from a contemporary news article, "Motor cycle tragedy." The Reading Standard, 19 June 1926, p9.

Lovely evening out with 3 mates (one I've not seen in yonks). Met at our usual coffee place, then to a Thai restaurant most of us haven't been to since the Beforetimes™️.

Best prawn pad thai I've had at least 10 years, and cheaper and better than the food+gaming venue we've frequented for a couple of years. Perfect early summer evening. 😍

Now can't move. Halp... 😄
