Every programmer who swears by the "don't reinvent the wheel" mantra should go ahead and put bicycle wheels on their car, see how that turns out. Reinventing the wheel is how you make your software efficient and, maybe even more importantly, it's how you learn. It's also lots of fun, which I believe is absolutely crucial in any creative line of work, which programming is.
Ah the frustration of knowing you've written code before that does something super similar to what you need to do now, but you simply cannot recall in what project you did that and none of your search terms are finding it.
