In 1899, after the murder of her husband in the aftermath of the Armenian Massacres of 1894-1896, the family walked from their home in the Geghi region to Kharpert (Harput), eastern Anatolia (Turkey) seeking help from missionaries. 16 décembre. Aujourd’hui, tentons de débrouiller un peu les termes neck, plug et protrusion, autour desquels il semble y avoir une certaine confusion. Le mot neck (« cou » en anglais) désigne un ancien conduit magmatique dégagé par l’érosion. Les matériaux meubles du volcan (cendres, scories…), qui formaient autrefois un cône entourant le conduit magmatique, ont disparu, laissant seulement le cylindre central de roche plus résistante. Le mot plug (« bouchon » en anglais) désigne… un ancien conduit volcanique dégagé par l’érosion. La plupart des glossaires et dictionnaires de géologie définissent neck et plug comme des synonymes, une des entrées renvoyant à l’autre. Les deux termes sont interchangeables.
Ça se complique avec protrusion. Le terme est ambigu, tantôt employé pour désigner un neck, tantôt pour désigner une aiguille de lave visqueuse (comme celle de la montagne Pelée en 1903). Or si les deux se ressemblent, ils ne naissent pas de la même façon. L’éruption d’une aiguille est un processus extrusif, c’est-à-dire avec émission de lave en surface, tandis qu’un neck est intrusif – ce n’est que longtemps après sa création qu’il finit par faire émerger.
Je propose donc unilatéralement de bannir le terme protrusion, et d’en rester aux termes intrusion et extrusion (pour les processus), et aux termes neck/plug et aiguille (pour les formes de relief résultantes).
