@snailrageprints it was a neat project and I learned some things: - I don't particularly like the destruction inherent in the reduction process. I know, I know, all creation is destruction, but I'd rather come out with blocks I could print again and again.
-Getting precise registration (aligning the paper with the printing block) with otherwise delightfully wispy deckled paper edges is an incredible challenge
- these color inks are not quite as opaque as I was led to believe, I had to do some additional mixing to get the pure green (shown here) to look green at all upon the red in the combined print. (It first came out looking black)

The first, red layer of the Free Palestine watermelon print on its own. The letters are rounded and irregular with thin internal outlines, the outermost edge a sort of dashed line. The bright red segment of a circle is only broken by a thin white line between the rind and the interior of the melon. Carving line "noise" shows on the left side of the print. The second, green layer of the Free Palestine watermelon print. The outermost edge of the letters has been carved away, and the new outermost edge is now dashed. Most of the center of the melon segment is gone, leaving behind just the rind and 9 stylized seeds. Carving "noise" is mostly visible on the top of the page. The ink is a phthalo green with some variation in thickness. The topmost, black layer of the Free Palestine watermelon print, on its own. The letters are much thinner, but still rounded and irregular. Only the nine seeds of the watermelon remain, as well as small bits of carving noise throughout the print, particularly on the top and sides.

I made a new linocut! It is inspired by an illustration I made for Climate Illustrated some years ago – some of you might remember it. The illustration shows different »islands of peace«, which are places or things that mean peace to people. This linocut shows the island of nature. Also included in the original illustration are the island of home and the island of family. My plan was actually to carve all three islands in lino to have a small series in the end, but I am not sure yet when I will find the time to do so.

Of this linocut I printed a small edition of 4 prints. Write me a message, if you want one of them. Unfortunately I forgot the name of the paper, but it is a yellowish Japan paper with a cloudy texture. It looks quite nice actually.

Hi there.

@Kulturagenten_hamburg initiated a workshop week @goetheschuleharburg this week and i've been there for two days, representing @griffelkunst and the not to be killed genre of printmaking (woodcut of course 🤠).

The so called IVK class (Internationale Vorbereitungsklasse) consisted of around thirteen kids, that are not born in Germany. They're here for less than twelve months and are mostly from areas of conflict, such as Syria, Ukraine, Afghanistan and so on.

Some of the kids are able to speak and understand up to five languages which i can't keep up with cause i only speak two. But as you can guess we've had no language in common ;).

However, the nice thing is that printmaking is pretty universal and even if we've had to use our hands and feet (okay okay also some translation apps) to communicate, every kid was able to cut and print almost two prints.

Pretty impressive!

I've managed to snap some pics in between, but there are no action shots of the kids cutting cause it's been pretty turbulent ;).

Interesting side fact:
The "Robust" press pretty much sucked, but it was saved from being thrown away and i guess therefore it was ooookay.

Here come some more pics of an older woodcut called "Shadowban".

It's a five colored reduction woodcut print, made from a single block of 8mm thick birch plywood. Edition of eight prints on 200 g/qm Römerturm "Oeuvre", papersize is 50 x 70 cm.

Each print is handnumbered and signed on the front. Please consider that each print is unique and shows different artifacts due to the printing process.

Can be found in my shop of course 🤠.

“Tree of life”
Hand-printed linocut.

This is a rather old linocut of mine from 2022, the year when I started to think a lot about life and death.

Day 13 #artAdventCalendar This regal (poodle) lady was a recent commission. Sometimes people offer you great photos to work from. I was uncertain about how to carve the curly fur, but my client said, “Oh! the curlz!” so I think I got it ☺️

My #linocut #tiger for #GlobalTigerDay. Habitat loss is a great threat to these great cats. They are endangered after a century of decline and only about 4,500 remain in the wild. The good news is there are signs of an uptick in numbers globally but the need for habitat preservation is urgent.

I love the weird and wonderful terms of venery - the collective nouns for groups of animals (and other things). Some are evocative, some strange and obscure.

Also made my 'Listen to Meg' print available to pre-order. I'm still working on the edition of 12 but worth sharing these early for despatch in about a week's time

Photo of a number of linocut prints in black ink hanging from a rail. Centrally one print is fully visible. The printed image shows a massive standing stone decorated with circular rock art before a turbulent sky of clouds and force lines. At the foot of the stone is grass and a single foxglove. At the base of the print are the words 'count the stones as 'round you walk listen to Meg and she will talk' in a script-style typeface reminiscent of the gothic work of William Morris. The paper is lightly toned with irregular deckled edges' and is not fully rectangular. At the top of the photo can be seen the peg used to suspend the image on the rail.

For #WorldOceanDay I thought I would share a print with both a vertebrate and invertebrate ocean species. This linocut and gel plate print shows the humpback whale swimming above and a close up of the whale below with six Coronula diadema barnacles.

The Coronula diadema name comes from its barrel and crown-like shape, which can grow to 5 cm (2”) tall and 6 cm (2.4”) in diameter. 🧵

My square 8” x 8” print on white washi paper. The upper two thirds are printed as a deep blue-green rectangle with missing unprinted white silhouette of a humpback whale now filled with a linocut print of the humpback in dark blue-grey. The tip of its mouth and tail extend into the white margin space. The bottom third is a grey rectangle with the missing silhouettes of 6 barnacles unprinted in white now filled with linocut C. diadema barnacles with silver striations and orange centres with opercular valves.
