How much does landform position matter for vegetation dynamics across Calgary?

I explored how ΔNDVI (2025-2024) varies across geomorphon classes (summit, ridge, slope, hollow, valley, etc.) using a large spatial dataset (~194k observations).

A few key points from the analysis:
• Non-parametric Kruskal–Wallis test shows statistically significant differences between geomorphons
• However, the effect size is moderate (ε² ≈ 0.04)
• Distributions strongly overlap — landform position matters, but it is not a deterministic driver
• Median ΔNDVI tends to be higher in lower landscape positions (hollows, footslopes, valleys), consistent with moisture and accumulation controls

Improving Forest Loss Mapping In Nepal Using Landtrendr Time-Series And Machine Learning

“HIGHLIGHTS:
• ViT-based forest mask, multispectral ensemble LandTrendr and terrain shadow mask.
• District-level RF/XGBoost model training with expert-weighted validation.
• Outperformed GFC and REDD + AI benchmarks in accuracy and F1 performance.
• RF excelled in High Mountains/Himalayas; XGBoost in the lower Mountain regions.
• NBR contributed the most; snow-impacted forest loss uncertainty was observed..."

Ref 2. NASA : Himalayan Snow Lines on the Rise
According to scientists tracking the region’s snow & ice, a combination of warmer & drier conditions has contributed to this upward creep of the winter snow line—the elevation at & above which seasonal snow persists on glacial ice. The shift has implications for regional water security & fire activity.
