✨ From an outdoor covered porch to no floor to bare studs to bright windows, it’s amazing to look around and see how far this old house #renovation has come.

What was once just a vision is now really feeling "real" and taking shape. We needed a third bedroom and second bathroom and with the walls framed and light pouring in, we are telling our part of the story of this old #house. Each board, old and new, have a chapter.

There’s something deeply special about building our family’s place inside this 105-year-old #Appalachian bungalow.

Sure, at first glance, we are #renovating but we are also making sure to honor #history of place and location while creating new memories for the generations ahead. Every nail, every wire, every beam feels like a bridge between the past and our future. It is incredibly and deeply moving. I didn't think I would feel this way about "someone else's house" other than my #ancestors ... But I do.

Here’s to old bones, new dreams, and the little mountain spot we get to call home. Yep, I am getting misty eyes. 🏡💛🌲

The photo shows the inside of a house under renovation. The view is framed by two vertical wooden studs, with a gray electrical cable running through a drilled hole between them in the foreground. Beyond the studs, you can see the unfinished room with bare wooden framing, exposed plywood floor, and a newly installed window letting in bright sunlight. The light casts rectangular patches on the floor. A piece of green construction sheathing board leans against the wall to the left, and outside the window, a hint of red from a nearby structure is visible. The whole scene captures the raw stage of construction before drywall, paint, or finishing touches are added.

🌸🌼 Spot the Impostors!
Some of these flowers are soaking up the rain…
…and some are just pretending. 😉

With late in the season for annuals and not sure which perennials I want to plant, I bought some realistic faux bunches of flowers. Interestingly, these faux ones have already survived heavy downpours and didn't get destroyed.

Can you guess which blooms are real and which are faux?

A small garden bed bordered by red bricks, with brown wood mulch covering the soil. On the left side is a bright cluster of small yellow flowers with black centers, appearing artificial. On the right side is a green leafy plant with several vivid pink flowers (pink roses are real). The bed is against the base of a white house, and some small green weeds are growing along the brick border.A long flower bed lined with stacked red bricks runs along the side of a white house. Pink rose bushes grow near the wall, mixed with other small flowering plants in shades of red, pink, and purple. A small garden flag with a large orange and pink daisy design reads “Welcome.” The ground beyond the bed is covered in green grass.

🚿🧽🧼100+ year old walls will not be covered up in modern drywall on my watch. These beautiful wood shingles will be seen and loved.

The photo shows the top portion of a person’s face, focusing on their eyes and hair. They are wearing brown, tortoiseshell-patterned glasses. Their dark brown hair is tied up loosely, with wisps and strands sticking out in a slightly messy, casual style. In the background, there is part of a light-colored wooden house with some weathering, a section of exposed wood trim, and a white-framed window. Through the glass, a porch or covered outdoor space is faintly visible.A man is standing on a small step ladder, working on the exterior wall of a house. He’s wearing a tan baseball cap, sunglasses, black gloves, a dark red T-shirt, black shorts, and black slip-on shoes. He appears to be sanding or scrubbing near the top corner of the wall, just under the roof overhang. The siding is weathered, with patches of bare wood around a white-framed window, suggesting that repairs or restoration are underway. A white and green downspout runs along the left side of the wall, and the floor beneath the ladder is unfinished plywood.

I was watching a #YouTube video yesterday tracing an #American couple #renovating an old rural #school they had purchased & now live in.

In one video she decided to #explore the large plot of ground around the school.

She went to the local #library & took out a #MetalDetector!

Libraries lending out metal detectors! What a brilliant idea ‘coz they aren’t cheap.

This afternoon, with only light rain falling, I excavated the sinking corner of an old shed and got a hydraulic jack under it to bring it up to level.

But the base is rotted so I'll need to cut away the punky wood and put in something treated. Then I can build up a foundation with better drainage.

The corner of a shed has a bunch of blocking supporting it, and a little red 4ton hydraulic jack supports the more solid edge. This is all below ground level.
The lower part of the wood is rotting away.

Reference for people who need to install new floors and have strict condo boards who are fussy about noise: I removed the carpet tack strips in a 9.5x12' room 3x3.5m in 40 minutes.

Also, wall to wall carpeting is disgusting and no-one should ever use it unless they have no other choice.

Sib helped me out many years ago with a failed house renovation project.

The 'bathroom' before and after.

We planned to do a quick tile over.

BIL decided the whole room needed to go, floor and all! At least they replaced the floor, bath and the plasterboard. But sib had to laser relevel the floor because the drain was the highest point... And surrounded by 100mpa concrete that was near indestructable* so it wasn't a simple fix.

Looking through a doorway into a bathroom in the process of being renovated. The floor is very rough concrete, plastic bottles blocking the drains, bare electrical wires hanging from the right wall, raw unpainted plasterboard on the walls. Loose concrete litters the floor, and a power tool can be seen at left.Looking through a doorway into a bathroom in the process of being renovated. A spa bath is mounted in the rear left, with various building materials and tools lying about the room. Waterproof membrane has been applied to the plasterboard around the bath and shower area at left.Same view as first image through the door looking right - this time of the renovated bathroom. Sparkling white tiles cover the walls, a blue patterned frieze in one row at eye level, complementing the blue tiled floor. Glossy white vanity unit and a large frameless mirror at right, adjustable downlights above. Chrome towel rails further along the wall.Same view as second image through the door looking left - this time of the renovated bathroom. Tiles continue around the walls. The spa bath now has a tiled surround and step, matching and aligning with those on the walls. Sib was near OCD about details. The edge of a glass frameless shower can just be seen at left. It was the only bit my sibling didn't do in this room - the shower quotes came with installation included. He did pay a lot of attention to how it was done - the installer was an expert with methylated spirits and silicon, spraying and wiping away excess with deft movements.

I ask myself why I am painting the cornices of this bedroom with such care when I will never sleep here again.

“It’s pride in a job done properly,” I think.

But deep down, I know it’s because I want this to be a sanctuary, and for no other woman to wish that the painters had done a better job.

And so I take the time and care to do it as well as I can do, and hope that the future residents never spend the time examining the ceiling at all.

Putting the patio back in order after the retaining wall has been built gives me so much more mental calm. I will be tweaking the plants and mulch and reticulation for days though. This wall goes the whole length of the house. The good news is that the jasmine has survived the fence and the wall building projects. The fish in the pond are still alive too, after days of being under cover

A green fence with a brick garden bed in front. The patio now has a bench seat and table with water bottle and glasses on it. A washing basket is there too. Some pit plants are in the raised garden

Nearly done! Tradie not only finished the retaining wall but cleaned up afterwards and filled the skip! I have my patio back from under mounds of dirt, and tomorrow I can start replacing the plants and reticulation.

Not only that but we have a decent thunderstorm and rain which is settling the soil behind the new wall.

Brickie needs to come back in a few days for the acid wash.

We have ordered another skip.

Feeling much happier with the progress today.

Okk. The tradie is back! Bricks are being laid, but he is going home for the brick cutter. This retaining wall 🧱 is huge.

Thank goodness I am taking the grandson to the pool.

OMG it is 7 am and we have a tradie on site!
Plumber here to move a water pipe outside and put in a new tap inside.
The garden looks like there are armies digging in for a long campaign.

This retaining wall project has spread everywhere.

At least we made the coffee.

Day 3 of the retaining wall project. Wall is being raised but not finished. Mud and dirt abounds. Plumber comes at 7 am tomorrow. Brickie is at another job tomorrow. Maybe back Wednesday. Maybe.
Note to self: when the tradies say 3 or 4 days, ask if they are consecutive!

We are Day 2 of the retaining wall build. There are piles of dirt on the patio, the builder's trailer is in the garage, there is a pack of bricks in the carport, my plants are all over the place and I need a plumber and a skip.

The middle of any project is much worse than the beginning.
