Laos 2007. I spent few weeks travelling there and Thailand with some friends. We did mostly rock climbing but also wanted to see the country.

Backpacking trip in 2008 (November/December)
For our final destination in 2008 we spent a month in Cuba. Our journey took us from Havanna to Santiago de Cuba to Trinidad to Cienfuegos and finally for the last days of our journey to Varadero.

Cuba was an interesting country and full of contradictions. Tourists were ripped off from all pennies possible and also we were denied the use of local bus companies etc. But we met some wonderful people too when we stayed in casa particulares (rooms for rent in people's houses) and ate in paladares (restaurants kept by locals).

Cars and scenery were beautiful, food in paladares and casa particulares was good. Weather wonderful. 

We went to Varadero to an all inclusive resort for the last 5 days of our journey just to relax before going back home and experienced our first actual culture shock. The contradiction was too massive for all the places we had been in and the lifestyle we had had for the last 9 months that it was messing with our heads. Luckily we realised what was going on and were able to put things in perspective.

From Cuba we went back home for Christmas.

From Argentina we travelled back to Chile across the Andes before our final destination and spent a couple of more days in Santiago de Chile.

Backpacking trip in 2008 (October)
Next up Chile 🇨🇱 From New Zealand we flew to Chile where we started our 2 month tour in southern parts of South America.
Luckily we had friends in Santiago de Chile who showed us around town and introduced us to Pisco Sour 😋
From Santiago we continued up north to Valparaiso and from there to Atacama desert on a 21 hour bus ride.
During our trip in Valparaiso we had some sort of food poisoning which was horrendous and caused a loss of appetite for the next 5 days.
Despite of this San Pedro de Atacama and the sights surrounding it were amazing! One of the places I wish I will have a chance to visit again in the future.

Reissu vuonna 2008 (lokakuu)
Seuraavaksi Chile 🇨🇱 Uudesta-Seelannista lensimme Chileen mistä aloitimme 2 kuukauden Etelä-Amerikan eteläosan kierroksen.
Meillä oli ystäviä Santiago de Chilessä, jotka esittelivät meille kaupunkia ja tutustuttivat Pisco Souriin 😋
Santiagosta matkamme jatkui pohjoiseen Valparaisoon ja sieltä 21 tuntia kestävälle bussimatkalle Atacama autiomaahan.
Valparaisossa olomme aikana saimme jonkinlaisen karmean ruokamyrkytyksen, joka vei ruokahalun seuraavaksi 5 päiväksi.
Siitä huolimatta San Pedro de Atacama ja sitä ympäröivä luonto/nähtävyydet olivat huikeita! Yksi niistä paikoista jonne toivon voivani vielä joskus palata.

The pictures we took then aren't very informative 😁

Next stop after Malaysia was Singapore. My husband had fever for most of the week but we did manage to visit Singapore zoo and the island of Sentosa (they were building the Universal Studios when we visited the island and the now famous tree city and hotel Marina Bay Sands which are basically in every Instagram post from Singapore, did not exist). Singapore was interesting and I would love to visit it again some day.

Reissu vuonna 2008 (heinäkuu)
Kuvat mitä silloin otettiin eivät ole kovin informatiivisia.

Malesian jälkeen seuraava pysäkkimme oli Singapore. Mieheni vietti lähes koko viikon kuumeessa, mutta onnistuimme vierailemaan kuitenkin Singaporen eläintarhassa ja Sentosan saarella. (Kun olimme Singaporessa Universal Studioita rakennettiin Sentosan saarelle, eikä nyt kuuluisia kaikissa Instagramin päivityksissä näkyviä puukaupunkia ja hotelli Marina Bay Sandsiä ollut olemassakaan). Singapore oli mielenkiintoinen ja haluaisin ehdottomasti päästä vielä vierailemaan siellä uudemman kerran.

Backpacking trip 2008 May
Next stop after Japan was Thailand. We really don't have too many good pictures from there, but enough to remember the hot air and ocean.

These pictures are from the island Koh Tao where we spent 5 days in this hut on a cliff. It was on the other side of the island from the main beach where there was just this one accommodation with one restaurant. Total relaxation 🌅

Japanin jälkeen siirryttiin Thaimaahan. Sieltä meillä on todella vähän hyviä kuvia, mutta onneksi niistä vähäisistäkin muistaa meren ja kuuman ilmaston.

Nämä kuvat on Koh Taon saarelta, jossa vietimme 5 päivää tässä kallion reunalla olevassa majassa. Tämä majoitus sijaitsi saaren toisella puolella, jossa oli vain tuo yksi majapaikka ja sen ravintola. Täydellinen paikka rentoutua 🌅

Japan Part 1 from our backpacking trip in 2008

Here we are in Japan 🇯🇵 April 2008. Enjoying Japanese grill close to mount Fuji in Kawaguchi, the Shinto shrine in Asakusa Tokio, Cherry trees, having some wonderful "then small brewery" beers in a small bar in Beppu and our accommodation on a boat from Beppu to Osaka.
