Yep, it’s that time of year…the fall cold fronts have triggered the snakes to head for hibernacula staging areas, and that sometimes means prairie rattlesnakes that have gone unnoticed all summer have traversed through yards and been at higher risk of encountering people. Not their fault and they’re not interested in staying there, but does mean the people wise enough to ask for help and not try and take risky chances doing obscene acts to the wildlife are calling me a little more frequently. This young male was very fired up but as usual avoidied trying to to bite despite the display, and is now hopefully well away from the houses while still in the territory he’s familiar with.

Baby rescue tonight: juvenile prairie rattlesnake, moved away from houses so that hopefully it grows up without encountering people.
A video about this was shared in a neighborhood group to encourage awareness and wise responses…and I was unfortunately immediately reminded why I despise humanity, because the first comment made was about how the person was going to kill them rather than do anything smart like clean up their yard, teach their kids/train their animals so that all future conflicts might be mitigated, or, you know, call the guy that shared the relocation video they commented on…and upon being told how disrespectful that response was and how killing a snake does nothing more than justify it defending itself with its only weapon and show cowardice in violence, I was the one labeled a loose cannon rather than the guy who actually commented about committing an action resulting in harm.
Snakes are a window to who people really are, whether they love or fear them. Because fear can still coexist with responsible behaviors and respect of life, but harming a snake cannot.

Having a Monty Python moment at Rakiura
The strict stare og 2,6-meter wingspan of the white-capped albatross certainly reminds us of the great John Cleese and the Monty Python classic.
This Aotearoa albatross is a regular of the southern New Zealand islands. Rakiura / Stewart Island itself has observed visits from 11 variants of this bird species with the giant wingspan. Probably because Rakiura is surrounded by large undisturbed ocean with great fishing, and the island has large areas with hills and cliffs and not too many humans.
Probably for the best. Observing, or being observed, by albatrosses several times both at South Island and Rakiura, this bird is obviously very curious. And they should be separated from too much human interference and disturbance.
But then you walk and suddenly feel watched…

Photo shows a frontal shot of a large bird with a large wingspan. The wings are in diagonal from upper left to lower right. The large bird body is white, and wings are black. Front view shows grey shoulders, eyes with a strict type of eyebrow and a large yellow beak. The bird is staring directly at the viewer. In the background there is a blue sky but just behind the bord is a white cloud.

A Canada goose looking over its goslings. Photo taken this week on the coast of Vancouver Island from a very safe distance and with a telephoto lens. Always keep a respectful and safe distance from wildlife, particularly when they are with their young.

A Canada goose looking over six goslings that are resting next to each other on the shoreline. Only one of them is walking, ready to join the group and take a nap with them.

Humans really need to learn how to live in the exact same environment that everything else does. Thinking that removing the problem will work is egocentric, ignorant, and destructive of said ecosystems. In ecology, wildlife is literally about habitats. The human equivalent? As in real estate: location, location, location. #RespectWildlife

This image is not of the greatest quality for 2 reasons:
One I cannot control: harsh light.
One I can control: respecting wildlife.
This is not about me ‘’getting the shot’’ but keeping my distance from a river otter that needs to eat in order to survive. Getting closer would have stressed the otter that would have probably fled, leaving behind this nutritious food. #RespectWildlife
