- Why are there no transparent masks (with real health protection) which don't obstruct face?
- What are the best masks for speakers?
- Are the cartridge respirators better?
- Where's the sweet spot between protection and public engagement (not making wearer look like biohazard liquidator or specops)
- When open hardware respirators, produced at hackerspaces?
I'm a white man, so I don't generally get any grief for wearing a #respirator, but the two or three people who've commented and the one who's really acted up have all been white men.
But there may be something more complex at work: maybe people who aren't white men would be just as inclined to make a fuss about the respirator but they fear that I'd react more harshly to them than I would to a white man. (I wouldn't, but they have no way of knowing that. As an older white guy, I'm firmly in the racist, sexist, Reform-voting demographic, especially in the summer, when I have a shaved head.)
It took seven elevators to get a solo ride to the lobby today (only 9 floors in our elevator bank) ~ tied my record!
It was because there was some event on fourty and all the ppl from Moody’s kept taking my ‘vator. Five tries on that floor, alone.

Had a rare moment of suitably snappy comeback earlier today.
As I passed an older couple shopping in an aisle, the woman said "Oh, cute!" and then stammered a bit as she tried to get the man's attention from the shelves and towards me, as she continued with "That thing, I mean. That's cute."
Me: "Oh, that's okay, I'm cute, too." 😀
She looked slightly mortified and then relieved when I continued, "Seriously though, thanks. I just finished this design a few weeks ago and I'm rather happy with it."

I kinda want a full-face #elastomeric #respirator…it will probably draw even more stares than the half-mask, but it feels good to be insulated from “the outside”, and I kinda want the same for my eyes. I also like the idea of applying a dark film to the visor (as documented by @1 on its blog) to hide more of my face.
But I imagine it will be a total PITA to don and doff for drinking water, or eating something, or talking to people…
Surely someone somewhere has tried to make a hydration port for these things?
And what about a little microphone which connects to a Bluetooth speaker to improve communication? (The speaker could be anywhere outside the mask e.g. worn near the neck or chest…)
EDIT: someone privately mentioned that there are respirators with drinking tubes and voice emitters (those were terms I wasn’t aware of!), and mentioned the MSA Millennium series. Thanks!

This is wrong-headed. Visible badge number is enough! Current bill does *not* ban medical masks. Slippery slope means when ICE switches to medical masks (to hide identity), they'll be banned, too.
Badge showing organization & number I.D. is enough, faces are not required. Don't criminalize public health. Don't penalize those of us who mask daily.

Update: I received over 40 pro-mask messages of people wearing N95 or similar respirators! I think there are even more, I lost count a few times. Thank you SO much to everyone who participated and helped take care of themselves and their communities.
For my birthday & Stonewall Riots anniversary tomorrow (June 28), I would love if you would wear an N95 or comparable mask! I especially invite allies, friends & family of disabled people, and anyone who attends work/school/hobbies/etc where someone else wears a respirator to wear one. (A respirator is the technical term for masks with N95 or comparable protection ratings.)

As for the Stonewall tie-in, Queer people are higher risk for Long Covid, and yet pride events are often inaccessible to many queer & disabled people. If you’re going to a pride event this weekend and wear a respirator, you are actively helping protect your communities from developing chronic health conditions, severely worsening existing chronic illness, and frankly, death.
I’m only asking you to wear a respirator at some point on or near June 28. If you only do it for the photo, at least you learned where to find one, and practiced wearing it again. But who knows, if we’re lucky, you might find it more comfortable than you thought, or even remember how great it is to not have people see your facial expression, and wear a respirator a bit more frequently.
