A low-angle shot looks up into the dense, bright green canopy of an oak tree against a partly cloudy sky. The leaves are lobed and a vibrant green, densely packed on the dark brown branches that crisscross the view. Some branches are thicker and more prominent in the foreground, while others disappear into the mass of foliage. A green parakeet is hidden between the leaves in the middle of the frame. The sky visible through the leaves is a mix of light grey and darker, overcast patches.

🌏 Indian rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri manillensis) ♀

The Indian rose-ringed parakeet is a vibrant green parrot, the adult male having a distinctive black and pink collar around its neck. Native to the Indian subcontinent, it has also been introduced to other parts of the world, including Europe and North America. These social birds are often seen in flocks, feeding on fruits, seeds, and nuts. They are known for their loud, chattering calls and their ability to mimic human speech.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1). Note: Where introduced, rose-ringed parakeets may affect native biodiversity.

Another early-awake so walked out for a spot of patch birding. Lots of #mallard but no little grebes on the #LittleGrebe pond - and a #LittleEgret in place of the usual #GreyHeron. #RingNeckedParakeet for the first time in a while too. Relaxing start to the day… time to go stare at a computer screen all day now.

I'm not a great fan of 'alien' species but have to admit that these brought a smile to my face earlier today. The two males were beautifully marked and I only saw the (presumed) female when I watched the video this evening.

In previous years this colony has used the old trees in the outskirts of #Exmouth #Devon but these have moved into holes on an electricity pole.

A morning on the east side of the River Exe, starting in the Maer Valley just outside #Exmouth where there is a small colony of Ring-necked Duck. Then onto Bowling Green Marsh for the high tide. The latter was quiet - both in terms of waders (hardly any) and peace and quiet (lots).

Hated because on the one hand "they don't belong" and on the other they like to spend the night in great swarms on trees and the shit is hard to clean from the streets... They're originally from India and nobody knows for certain how they came to live here - enough of them must have escaped from captivity to form populations.
