Roadside America

A miniature village created by Laurence Gieringer in 1935 in his home. But with growing interest Geringer purchased land in Shartlesville, Pennsylvania where the display opened to the public in 1953.

In 2020 Roadside America announced that they were closing permanently and auctioning off the display.

My family visited this wonderful site often in the 60s - a great memory from my childhood

This “Barber” room door at the El Trovatore Motel in Kingman, AZ made me laugh out loud. ✂️🚪 A bald barber with giant scissors painted above swinging saloon doors — right on the actual motel room door! A door within a door… only on Route 66. Pure quirky Americana charm.

🚂 Confusion Hill sports a switch‑back Mountain Train. It climbs redwood slopes in zig‑zags, then dives past hollow trees watched by… more chipalopes.

🎩 The head‑twisting size trick you see in Gravity Shacks comes from a 1930s optical experiment called the *Ames Room*—later used to shrink Hobbits in *Lord of the Rings* and to detach Mr. Wonka from the hoary confines of size in the original *Willy Wonka*.

Totem pole at an Iowa gas station. It made me feel like it was something out of a Wes Anderson movie, so that was the vibe I was going for!

In the spirit of maintaining a balance with my serious posts, I give you this.

If anyone is interested in sponsering a cross-country road-trip for an in-depth photo essay on roadside hot dog characters, let's talk.

A picture of a man standing next to a life-sized statue of a hot dog in a bun, wrapped in an American flag. The hot dog is holding a squeeze bottle of mustard in its left hand. In its right hand, the hot dog is holding a squeeze bottle of ketchup over its head and squeezing ketchup onto its forehead.

Cadillac Ranch was absolutely trashed when I arrived one rainy day, but there’s no denying that it’s a #Vibrant place—at least, spraypaint wise. #opcWeeklyTheme 📷 #roadsideattraction #touristtrap #amarillo #texas #roadtrip

Babe the Blue Ox was the pet and closest companion of Paul Bunyan, the lumberjack giant of American folklore. Giant statues of the legendary duo can be seen across the United States, including this historic roadside attraction in Bemidji, Minnesota.

Located an hour north of Tampa, Weeki Wachee Springs was one of Florida's first tourist attractions when it opened it 1947 and was famous for its "live mermaids." A specially-designed underwater theater was built to allow visitors to watch the mermaids perform. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2020 and continues to operate as a state park.

#RoadTrip Recollections. Oct 3, 2015: Mitchell, South Dakota. The World's Only Corn Palace. (Not adorned with corn at the time of our visit.)

Matt B and his husband stand on either side of a statue, shaped like a human-sized ear of corn with a cartoonish happy face. Behind them is a multi-purpose arena building, usually decorated with crop art.
