The number of roadworks in the UK has drastically increased, with a record 425,524 miles of roads worked on in 2024. Father Mathew Quay Torn Up

Father Mathew Quay is a road that is definitely closed. The tarmac has been torn up to be remade into something better, hopefully.

Motorists and residents face months of disruption as Townhill Road roadworks begin

Starting Monday 4 August, contractors for National Grid Electricity Distribution will begin digging up sections of the road and pavement to install upgraded underground cables between Uplands and Townhill.

The work, expected to last several months, is part of a wider project to reinforce Swansea’s electricity infrastructure and support future demand.

Townhill Road is a key route connecting Sketty and Tycoch at Broadway with Townhill, Mayhill and Gors Avenue, meaning the upcoming works will significantly affect travel and access in the area.

Safety barriers, construction machinery, and restricted parking will be in place along the route, with access to properties maintained but some areas temporarily off-limits for parking.

National Grid says the timing was chosen to coincide with the school holidays to reduce traffic impact, but acknowledges there will be “unavoidable disruption.”

Ryan Davies, Head of Operations for Swansea, said: “We recognise there’s never an ideal time for this type of work, but these upgrades are vital to support future demand and ensure a resilient energy supply for the city.”

Residents and motorists are being thanked in advance for their patience while the works are carried out.

Work on Llanelli’s Sandy Road junction to start on Monday

Carmarthenshire Council says the improvement works, funded by the Welsh Government Local Transport Fund, are being carried out to tackle long-standing congestion issues and reduce delays and improve safety for all road users.

The proposals result in a total loss of six parking spaces along the A484 Sandy Road, either side of the Maes-Y-Coed.

Temporary lane closures along the A484 Sandy Road will be in place for work to be carried out, along with a full closure of Maes-Y-Coed extending up to, but not including, the private lanes located behind the adjacent properties.

The council said the work forms part of its wider strategy to enhance air quality and promote more sustainable, accessible transport along the A484 corridor.

It says the scheme aims to enhance access to key local destinations – Ysgol y Strade, Furnace School, and Coleg Sir Gâr – by creating safer, more reliable routes for students, staff, and families.

To keep the local community informed, two public drop-in sessions will be held at Sandy and Stradey Community Hall on 2 July, 10am – 12pm and 5pm – 7pm.

These sessions will provide an opportunity for residents and stakeholders to learn more about the project, and speak with representatives from Carmarthenshire County Council, AtkinsRéalis, Evan Pritchard (Contractors), and Core Highways (Traffic Management) for updates about the scheme.

From 2 July, weekly drop-in sessions will continue every Wednesday, from 10am to 12pm at Sandy and Stradey Community Hall, throughout the construction period.

Cllr Aled Vaughan Owen, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Decarbonisation and Sustainability said:

We recognise the long-standing concerns of local residents about congestion along Sandy Road, particularly at peak times. This scheme represents a significant investment in improving traffic flow, journey times and road safety in the area.

We are committed to engaging openly with the community throughout the process and encourage everyone to attend the drop-in sessions to share their views and ask questions.”

Locals have called for alternative solutions, including the removal of the traffic lights and restricting right turns onto Maes-y-Coed Road.

The council have said this is not an option due to traffic volumes and the space needed for larger vehicles safely turn into Maes-y-Coed. It added that without traffic lights vehicles attempting to enter and exit Maes-Y-Coed would face significant challenges, leading to increased congestion and potential safety hazards.

It says the traffic lights help regulate the flow of vehicles, ensuring that traffic moves smoothly and safely through the junction.

Busy Morriston road bridge to close for six weeks

Swansea Council leader, Rob Stewart highlighted the work being carried out by the South Wales Trunk Road Agent (SWWTRA) on social media.

SWWTRA, who manage South Wales’ motorways and trunk roads, say the bridge located on Heol Maes Eglwys Road in Cwmrhydyceirw, will be closed to pedestrians from 7 July and then to all traffic from 18 July until 29 August.

A spokesperson from SWWTRA said: “Shortly essential upcoming works to refurbish the M4 Maes Y Gwernen overbridge, located on Heol Maes Eglwys Road in Morriston, Swansea will begin.

“The works will be carried out by Centregreat Ltd on behalf of the South Wales Trunk Road Agent, acting as Agent for the Welsh Government.

“The bridge will undergo a full bridge deck refurbishment that includes a new deck waterproofing system and carriageway resurfacing.

“To undertake these works, we will need to close the bridge for a six-week period over the school summer holidays.

“Unfortunately, due to the nature of the works it will not be possible to carry out the refurbishment under lane closures.

“Whilst some noise disturbance and disruption can unfortunately be expected, every effort will be made to minimise any inconvenience caused.

“All alternative traffic and pedestrian routes will be clearly signed around the closure with further information available via our Traffic Wales website.”

The work will be carried out in two phases, with the first starting on 7 July, will see the removal of the existing footpath and traffic barrier kerb line. The structure will remain open to traffic, although pedestrians will be diverted.

The second phase starts on 18 July to fully refurbish the bridge deck, including re-waterproofing and resurfacing. The bridge will be closed to both vehicles and pedestrians for 6 weeks, commencing 8pm on the last day of school term (18 July).

Motorway traffic on the north side of the bridge will be diverted via Heol Maes Eglwys to Pant Lasau Road, then join the M4 at junction 46 (Llangyfelach Interchange).

Motorway traffic on the south side of the bridge will be diverted via Llanllienwen Road, then join the M4 at junction 45 (Ynysforgan Interchange).

Local traffic on the north side of the bridge will be diverted via Heol Maes Eglwys to Pant Lasau Road, then join the A48 and A4067 southbound. At the Ynysforgan Interchange, exit via Llanllienwen Road.

Local traffic on the south side of the bridge will be diverted via Llanllienwen Road, then take A4067 southbound to join the A48. Use Pant Lasau Road to reach local destinations on the north side.

The bridge is on a number of popular bus routes, including services 4, 4A, 24, 45, 46 and 142.

Swansea Bay News has contacted local bus companies to ask them what arrangements they are putting in place while the bridge closure is in effect.

Five weeks of roadworks to start on busy Carmarthen trunk road

The resurfacing work is taking place between Pensarn roundabout at the junction of the A40, A48 and A484 – and Glangwili roundabout at the junction of the A40 and A485 on both the eastbound and westbound carriageways.

The South Wales Trunk Road Agent (SWTRA), who maintain trunk roads and motorways in South Wales, say the resurfacing works will start on 19 June for 21 nights with an additional night planned on the 25 July to replace existing bridge joints.

Waterproofing repair work is also to be carried out on the Towy River Bridge known as Pont Cynnwr.

In order to undertake these works safely the A40 will be closed westbound between Glangwili Roundabout (A40/A485) and Llangunnor Roundabout (A40/A484) to traffic from Friday 4 July at 8pm through to Sunday 6 July at 6am.

Signposted diversions will take drivers on a 33 mile detour along the A48 to Cross Hands, the A476 to Llandeilo and the A40 back to Carmarthen.

SWTRA say that during the daytime, there will be periods where traffic will be running on the milled surface prior to the resurfacing works being carried out. Temporary markings and signage will be in place during this period and the speed limit will be reduced to 40mph.
