New Holocene Aboriginal rock art style identified in Australia

A recent study led by Dr. Ana Paula Motta, in collaboration with the Balanggarra Aboriginal Corporation, has uncovered a previously unknown style of rock art in Australia’s north-east Kimberley region. The findings, recently published in Australian Archaeology, propose the addition of a new category to the current Kimberley rock art sequence: the Linear Naturalistic Figures (LNF).

For a long time, a diverse series of regional animal motifs had been attributed to the Pleistocene-period Irregular Infill Animal Period (IIAP), known for their employment of dynamic and naturalistic depictions of animals such as kangaroos and wallabies, with irregular brushstrokes and diverse infill patterning. However, Dr. Motta and her team noted inconsistencies between some of these motifs that did not quite align with the characteristics of the IIAP...

"These Barrier Canyon Style figures in Horseshoe Canyon, Utah had their faces and torsos pecked—even the dog (tallest form, ~12in/30cm). Besides modern vandalism, some rock art seems to have been ritually pecked, mudded, or scrubbed, not always prehistorically. In 1980, Moab's Courthouse Wash rock art paintings were scrubbed. One theory proposes later shamanic cultures did this to weaken the images' power."

This exceptional Barrier Canyon Style painting (~2000 BCE or earlier - ~400 CE) is being covered up by calcium carbonate. Most BCS anthropomorphic forms are missing arms or legs as if wearing a robe but these forms even have fingers. The companion birds and snakes are a common feature of this style. Note the birds around the headdress. These forms have been pecked on, possibly by others, more on this to follow.

Two human-like red painted forms on a yellow rock cliff wall, one holding a snake, birds fly around the heads of the forms.

From the wild bison of Altamira to the ghostly hands of Sulawesi, early humans left behind a record of their spirit.

Western San Juan Basketmaker-style anthropomorphic forms along the San Juan river (~1,000 BCE - ~400 CE). Forms are roughly life-size. The figure on the right may be wearing a mask. Some of those who see these forms as shamanic theorize the hanging feet represent an altered state. Raft trips out of Bluff, Utah stop at this panel.

Six pecked human-like forms with large headdresses on a dark cliff wall, as well as other smaller forms.

Cliff swallow nests by the well-known Chaco 1054 Supernova rock art panel. Chinese records indicate July 4 1054 as when this "guest star" appeared, when the moon was nearly at first quarter. This supernova created the Crab Nebula. Halley's Comet appeared in 1066. At the middle bottom are concentric circles and faint red pigment flowing to the right, plausibly a record of that comet's appearance.

Yellow sandstone cliff wall and overhang with several round mud nests. On the underside of the upper overhang in red pigment are a star, a crescent moon, and a handprint. Below on the cliff wall are concentric circles in white with faint red pigment.

Darwin's expression, "the struggle for existence," is sometimes erroneously interpreted as the struggle between different species. In reality, the struggle Darwin was thinking of and which drives evolution forward is the competition between near relations. What causes a species to disappear or become transformed into a different species is the profitable "invention" that falls by chance to one or a few of its members in the everlasting gamble of hereditary change. The descendants of these lucky ones gradually outstrip all others until the particular species consists only of individuals who possess the new "invention."

These nearly life-size Fremont Style (~300 CE - ~1300 CE) anthropomorphic forms in Moab, Utah appear to hold shields and spears. The Fremont lived mostly north of the Colorado river and appear to have sometimes overlapped and interacted with the Ancestral Puebloan people to the south.

Three pecked human-like forms with headdresses, shields, and spears.
