New Face on the Block

People have been vandalising the rocks around here over 300 years, some of the inscriptions are in Latin, but I'm pretty sure this guy wasn't there on my previous visit.

Some might call it art, others vandalism, but it must have taken a fair bit of effort to carve this face in the rock. I wonder if they will come back to give it a forehead?

This is Granite which I picked up off the side of my dirt road. It's 3 inches wide and 3.5 long by 2 high (7.6 x 9 x 5 cm). It fits nicely in my palm and is perfect for a Civil Disobedience rally of your choice. Kidding, no violence please. Rocks are for looking at (and carving) not throwing! Carved with a Dremel 4300

A carved Granite oval shaped stone 3.5 inches long by 3 wide by 2 high (9cm by 7.6 by 5) seen by side view. The top has been carved in two layers resembling a mountain plateau, the top layer thinner than the second. A deep groove in a wavey pattern has been carved along the bottom 1/3 of the stone.

Welp...This was an experiment of sorts and I worked on it far too long and should have put it in the discard pile and moved on to something else. But here it is. It's 5.5 x 3.5 x 1.75 inches (14 x 9 x4.5 centimeters). I just don't feel comfortable with the design or the execution but at least I learned something which is always a plus. Sedimentary stone of some type I think.

Oblong stone 5.5 x 3.5 x 1.75 inches (14 x 9 x 4.5 centimeters) sitting on grass. The stone is medium gray in color. Carved in a swirling pattern with the carved portion darkened to bring out the design. It took far too long to carve and I am not happy with the way this turned out. But onwards the next one!

I should find some as it would make it easier to experiment carving designs

A flat water worn stone approximately 4 by 3 by 1.5 inches (10 by 7.5 by 3.8 cm). Looking down it has bulges on the side as if it had ears and then tapers from top to bottom. The color is dark Gray, almost like Slate. It's sitting on some green Moss.

Before/after pics. Granite. Start out with a pencil line and then use ever increasing width diamond bits. Following the line with the first bit is tedious as the stone is hard and the bit can wander. Easier in softer stone. Dimension in Alt Text. If I don't like the finished piece I put it in a pile then lug into the woods around me (measured in sq miles) and toss them about. I pity the poor archeologist a 1000 years from now going WTF?

Back in 2015 I made an #AR installation for the world heritage #rockcarving site in #Tanumshede, so I found it very interesting to see similar tech used to teach visitors about the workings of the #Grimeton #VLF #Radio Station.

It's a world heritage site on account of being the last operational long range mechanical radio transmitter, its design pre-dating vacuum tubes! It transmits #morsecode using a big spinning alternator wheel to generate a 17.2kHz signal which can reach New York and beyond

The 127 meter high antenna towers of the Grimeton world heritage site, six on total. Though the actual VLF antenna is made up of horizontal lines running between the towers.

The huge Alexanderson alternator, inside of which a spinning rotor with slots cut into it to generate the 17,2 kHz carrier signal. It has a distinct steam/dieselpunk vibe. In contrast, a vertical screen stands next to it showing an animation of the rotor inside, explaining how the 488 slots spinning at 2115 rpm creates the signal.

In the background neon signs spell out some historical destinations of the radio transmissions: Buenos Aires, New York, Bangkok, Sofia, Tokyo and Shanghai.

Another interactive exhibit in another part of the heritage site; a sort of radio receiver with a knob allowing the visitor to explore the sound of various radio bands. Grimeton is the lowest of the bunch, near some natural radio emissions such as the Down Chorus created by the sun as well as radio emissions from lighting and the planet Saturn.

A stone I carved a while back with a nod to ancient carvings found on rocks, most notably the circular designs. Looking closely you can seen a natural vein around the center. It's 3.5 inches wide, 3.5 high and 1.75 wide. (8.9 x 8.9 x 4.5 cm). More than likely Granite. Tool used was a Dremel 4800 with a round diamond bit.

A stone I carved a while back with a nod to ancient carvings found on rocks. A rounded stone 3.5 inches wide, 3.5 high and 1.75 wide (8.9 x 8.9 x 4.5 cm). The carving encompasses the stone in a circular manner, the bottom right has concentric circles similar to an eye. A thin natural seam runs around the middle. More than likely Granite.

No before image as this was carved before I started doing that. Trying to post this before power goes out, heavy snow in Maine. Stone is 3 by 5 inches (7.6 by 5 cm). Inspired by #Prehistoric rock carvings which I've been mesmerized by since childhood. (you know, before dirt).

A before and after picture since I have finally started showing stones I have carved since being on Mastodon. The pencil marks are where I hoped to carve but that sometimes changes on the finished stone. The finished stone has a light coat of polyurethane applied to contrast the carving. Much like wetting a stone to bring out it's colors. It's approx. 4.5" long, 3.5" wide and 2 inches high. (11.4 by 8.8 by 5 cm).

Another rounded stone that I carved recently. This one is 3 inches by 2.5 inches (7.6 by 6.3 centimeters). I'm running out of stock to carve so I have to get out and look for some soon. Perhaps I'll try along the rocky (of course!) coast nearby. Always great to be looking out over the North Atlantic even in Winter.

This is a smaller stone, 3 inches by 1.25 inches (7.6cm x 3.2cm) which was found along my dirt road. I generally look for stones that have some interesting aspects to them and this one appealed to me with the whitish ends. The second photo it almost looks like a slug crawling on the ground. The amount of time spent carving varies greatly depending on the stones hardness and of course size. This probably took 3 hours or so.

This is one of the heftier stones, approximately 5 inches long and 3.5 inches high (12.7cm by 8.9cm).

It's granite, just like all the ledge in my yard though this is rounded, probably by glaciers which once moved over my property long past. There are massive scar marks on the exposed ledge throughout my property from those moving mountains of ice.

Carved piece of granite 5 inches by 3.5 inches (12.7cm by 8.9cm). Stone is oblong rounded and the carving makes it look like it's separated into sections, almost like an accordion. Image is taken outdoors sitting on top of a granite ledge protruding from the ground.

A more recent carving on a stone which has a few Quartz veins running through. This one is called "Inter-lactating Unimorphous Diapolar Ionized Macticulation".

I don't name my carvings and if I did I would name them something like "Frank" or "Carla" or "That One Over There"

Okay, another carving but one that is a bit different than what I usually do. I really have to take 'before' pictures as it would explain what was done to this particular stone. No, I do not know what type of rock it is, though it was on the ground close to my house. Maybe someone has an idea of what the composition is?
