#Rugosa (rugose corals) are an extinct class of solitary or colonial corals that were abundant in Middle Ordovician to Late Permian seas.[1][2][3]

In honour of tomorrow's field trip, here is a solitary rugose (horn) coral in a block of Tyndall stone in downtown Calgary! This one is from the late Ordovician, about 450 million years ago.

Horn corals are named for their horn-like shape; this is a cross section. They are common fossils in downtown Calgary and the Rockies. They went extinct in the end-Permian mass extinction, about 252 million years ago.

I was given a few #fossils brought back from the island of #Gotland. They are from the #Silurian period.

1 and 7 is #Rugosa
2 is #Trilobits
3 is #Brachiopods
