On day 28, I was mostly surprised about my body still being able to run after all these relatively long runs the previous days. Of course, I had run farther distances before (marathon = 42k or 26 miles), but never had I tried to do consecutive long runs on a daily basis. This was exactly what the challenge was about for me - to find out if I could do it. That day went pretty well except for a thunderstorm coming with a downpour while I was out there. At the end of the day, I felt confident I can also finish the next 3 days.

On the 27th day, I began my run (27k) feeling relatively fresh and highly motivated. However, as the first glimpse of summer had shown itself that day with high temperatures and humidity, running became harder than necessary, albeit not unexpected given the mileage I had made already in the days accumulating to this.

Had a threshold test booked which had to be postponed so went out through frustration than necessity which meant it was not one of my better runs, breathing a struggle and needing the toilet didn’t help either. In my next clip I talk about one of the problems that I had during this challenge (the 496 challenge, where in a month with 31 days, you run the equivalent of kilometres depending on the date, i.e. now it’s 23k on May 23).

I solved the problem by running slower than usual and massaging my legs every day. I kept doing this until day 31, and this helped prevent further issues with cramps.

My experience on day 18 of the 496 challenge where in a month with 31 days you run as many kilometres as the day’s date (in this case 18k on May 18) shows the motivational struggles and ups and downs I occasionally had. Sometimes from one day to the other, at occasion, like on day 18, even during the run.

This clip was shot on day 17 of the 496 challenge, meaning I ran 17k. By now, I had established a pace half a minute slower than my usual easy run pace would be good to survive the next couple of days. For a long distance runner, the first 2 weeks are not much of a challenge, I’d say. Running 16k or even less each day are totally not a problem, and can be integrated into a full-time job business day somehow. I had taken leave from work for the last week of the challenge but not for the week starting with this clip.

Hey guys! I’m new here. I just found Mastodon after installing the Vivaldi browser.

I would like to share a series of short clips in the near future of me running the 496 Challenge by Sean Conway. You simply run each day a distance matching the day’s date (e.g. 1k on the first of the month, 2k on the second, etc.) in a month with 31 days. You’ll end up with a total of 496 kilometres at the end of the month. Sean, who gave himself the nickname “the endurance guy” says on his homepage that only 10% of those who start this challenge go on to finish it.

Well, I don’t know if that’s true. I did this challenge last month (May 2025) and managed to finish it. It was pretty hard in the last week. I finished 8 marathons in the past, so I’m not new to long distances, and I guess that helped me. Anyhow, I broke two personal records with this challenge: total distance per week and total distance per month.

I previously posted my clips to Facebook and Instagram and will share them here as well soon.
