Nice to have a reason that makes sense

🤔 There are disadvantages of living in a rural area however there are significant advantages.
Example:
Checking my email I discovered my and my husband's new glasses are ready for pick up. However, since they know my hubby is mobility challenged, and we no longer drive, they offered to deliver them to our home free of charge.
You won't see thoughtfulness like that too often in city.
I wonder if the fact they are an all female team might be a factor as well.
All three of us benefit. The neighbor doesn't have to pay to have the rocks dumped elsewhere. I don't have to pay to buy the rocks. The earthmoving guy doesn't have to drive the rocks all the way into town or some dumping area.
Apparently, the neighbor is moving more rocks than I can take, but I trust the earthmoving guy to give me exactly what he needs to finish the job. #RuralLiving (2/2)

Exciting times here in rural Aotearoa. We went for a walk in the late afternoon sunlight, and got out on the road to find that the new rubbish bins have been delivered! We strolled along, idly musing on which of the three sizes other people might have chosen. Then: a scandal! At one gateway, no fewer than six bins had been dropped off. Much speculation ensued, and when we ran into someone from further down the road come to collect his my guess turned out to be correct: the council delivery person decided they'd had enough, and dumped the rest of the load there.
We had a wee chat with the guy collecting his bin, whom we hadn't met before, then a neighbour came by, and we walked with her as far as her place, chatting about local history (found out her family has been in the area for generations).
It was nice. Slow-paced, gentle, considered. Our new acquaintance illustrated the vibe quite nicely: "I suppose I could call the Council to complain [i.e. about the bins]," he said. "But who can be bothered with that?"
He just loves it here. His whole personality changes by the ocean.
(Mine too!); he's so contented.
(Probably because he can escape from 'his brudder by another mudder' all day. After breakfast he's at the door to spend the day outside.
He sleeps by the door, so no one can go out without him. Then, he goes on the patio and sleeps?
I think he just likes the cool salt air.
Me too. #Cats #EverydayCaturday

DHMC is accepting new patients...in theory. They have no intake appointments available in the next 90 days, even in locations we'd have to drive two hours to get to.
$300 for the two of us to have regular care and be able to be seen on short notice feels like a godsend, even if it's fucking Amazon. 😭
Our only local clinic is closing its medical practice, and it's rumored that Dartmouth Hitchcock affiliates aren't accepting new patients. Which now has me considering paying to stay at One Medical. 😭
No denunciations of Amazon, thank you; we are quite aware! I am medically complex and my spouse is a transplant patient; we're just trying to stay alive.
So, my neighbors have added to their flock -- but now the smell is getting a bit stronger. Since I've talked to the neighbors about how I grew up around ducks and chickens, they know I'm not squeamish about all that. But there are ways to manage one's manure pile, and I'll plan on having a friendly discussion with them. Lime is readily available at the local hardware store, and given their lack of space, probably the best solution. But any other ideas would be appreciated (enclosed composter? pine shavings?).
Help! How can I control compost smell?

Sultry and damp in Cumbria and there is at least one fly on nearly every object in the house 🫤 #RuralLiving
Maybe in Auckland the weather was cancelled but here in Wairarapa we still get it. Lots of it. Bracing. Life is better in the country 😍 #RuralLiving #Wairarapa #Aotearoa #NewZealand
A Hidden Retreat on Sherkin Island
An old van sits in the driveway of a house on Sherkin Island, Co Cork. The barrier blocking the way is apparently used extensively on the islands off the Irish coast and in other rural areas, but I’m more familiar with seeing them in WWII films or war zones!

In a couple of months, this won't be our view over our back fence. We will be in a small cottage community in south Innisfil, with a rural feel but more closely surrounded by houses. Our neighour has approximately 20 cows in his herd, and 2 calves were born this week. He expects another 4 in the next few days. We'll also miss watching the young calves capering across the field and coming to our back fence to check out our dog Harley.
