Flash Fiction Friday – How To Take A Long Break

January 2, 2023, prompt: Write a story about a sabbatical in 99 words (no more, no less). Who needs one or has had one? What kind of tension could a rest create? Where can a break take your story? Go where the prompt leads! Click here for details.

How To Take A Long Break – by Hugh W. Roberts

Some think I have one of the most straightforward jobs in the world. It may look like that, but I still need a sabbatical.

Some think my job is one of the toughest, so I deserve a sabbatical.

Rain, shine, blizzards or gales, I have to do my job. I pledged that I’d never let anyone down. Some think I have too many days off, but people need to learn what goes on behind closed doors.

What’s the best thing about my job? Tearing the date ‘December 24th’ off the calendar and starting my sabbatical for another 364 days.

Written for the 99-word flash fiction challenge hosted by Charli Mills at the Carrot Ranch.

It’s been a super lazy week

I think I'm just mourning the end of the adventures, or maybe the end of the nice weather, or maybe I needed some recovery time, I don't know, but I've been pretty chill this week. Just catching up on some YouTube and TV watching. I haven't finished cleaning everything out of the truck or getting all my gear put away. Most of it, but not quite all of it. It's been chilly and damp. Hank and I got one longer hike in, at least. Jeff's been out moose hunting a few times, but hasn't had any […]

Reflecting on my road trip

I drove 15,590 km over the last two months. That’s a lot of kilometres of deep thoughts. I drafted various versions of summarizing my deep thoughts about it all, but it is all so personal, I can't word it in such a way that makes for good reading. At the core of it though - I loved every moment of it! I was full of happiness and love. Love for our big country. Love for every small town. Love of my truck. Love of my husband back home who was supportive of my adventure. I never once got […]

I've really enjoyed my short research visit to #Toulouse so far.

I'm on a research visit to the Université de Toulouse this week. First impressions: Students seem to read more books and smoke more cigarettes!

I've taken the bus out to our nearby cabin, pulled a deckchair onto the pier, and am working on some manuscripts. Here's hoping there won't be a gust of wind blowing all my manuscript pages onto the lake, and I'll have to wade in to rescue them, etc. #AcademicChatter #sabbatical #ProfessorThoughts

I have a warning for people considering a long .
I’m now into month 6 of 8 of my and one observation is a little surprising. I considered myself scriptural of a lot of business bullshit talk before starting the sabbatical. But after 5 months of isolation, I’m not just scriptural or cynical but asking myself how bad it will be to go back.

So consider yourself warned.

I'm on #sabbatical for the upcoming academic year. Today I stopped by the administration to ask how many students had been accepted for the master's program starting next week. "Oh, has nobody informed you yet?" they answer, as if about to tell me about the death of a friend... #AcademicChatter

Introducing Cathy!! My travel companion for the next month!

Introducing my childhood neighbour, friend, fellow girl guide, school bus rider, and 4H’er!

Last year Cathy and I were chatting, and she was talking about how she hasn’t seen much of the country and she was about ready to offer money to a long haul truck driver to tag along.

And I said, “Uhhh I may be driving from the Yukon to Ontario next year on my sabbatical, want my passenger seat?”

And that’s all it took to plant the seed!

We picked Cathy up at the airport in Whitehorse and […]

We’re on the road!

Jeff, Hank, and I are hunkering down in our new truck camper in the Pelly Crossing Campground, just off the Klondike Highway.

It’s a nice and convenient campground. Free too! No services and the outhouses are old but fresh new gravels pads and roads!!

We are doing our absolute best to try to stay orderly in here, but a truck camper is not that big! I think it’ll take a couple days until everything finds its home.

We keep bumping our heads and elbows and knees. We’ll figure it […]

Sabbatical

I’ve been on sabbatical this June. I feel grateful for this opportunity. It helped me rediscover myself that I lost track of over the past few years.

Usually, when I take some time off, it’s because of travel, be it for a fun vacation, for some unfortunate family emergency, or for some other reason. I never got to take a solid chunk of time-off and do nothing. This time, I did exactly that.

Before the sabbatical, I planned out a ton of things to do during. I wanted to pick up on new technologies, pick up new hobbies, build new projects (I even sketched everything out), and get ripped.

As I got close to the timeframe, I remembered what was more important to me and dropped all of my ideas and stuck to my original plan of doing nothing. It was hard, initially. But, I was able to do it.

I just wanted to do what I used to do – hang out at random coffee shops and read up on random things. I did just that. I had a great time doing that.

During the course of this month, I’ve significantly lowered my consumption of social media. I deleted a ton of apps from my phone. I pruned my desk, and upgraded some of my everyday-use gear.

I didn’t want to keep in touch with anyone during this time and didn’t bother to update any one of what I was up to. I didn’t care much about what I ate. I worked out of various coffee shops and coffeeshop hopped on a regular basis.

That’s it. That’s all I did. It was definitely not bad at all.

Thank you, Adobe.
