Some pictures from the San leandro reservoir on a wet day perfect for amphibian herping.
we saw tons of the slender #salamanders, too many to count. so far one Ensatina and one Newt. The newts are extremely toxic with sequestered tetrodotoxin

@animalculum very fascinating that not only certain insects can be #activeinwinter temperatures, but even #salamanders.
In the snow, these #salamanders get supercool https://www.npr.org/2025/12/24/nx-s1-5649922/snow-ice-blue-spotted-salamanders-supercool preprint: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2025.03.28.645960v1.full
"blue-spotted salamanders can be seen walking on snow, but it was thought that this happened when temperatures had warmed up a bit... now, the researchers had a thermal camera with them... some salamanders had temperatures below freezing... they apparently have some kind of natural anti-freeze that allows them to become supercooled... letting them start their breeding as early as possible"
For the last 20 years, Dominican nuns in a Mexican monastery have cared for the largest known captive population of the critically endangered achoque salamander. Now scientists from Chester Zoo in the U.K. are collaborating with the sisters and Mexican conservationists to test a microchipping method that they hope will help them monitor the species’ dwindling wild population, reports Mongabay’s Liz Kimbrough.

I continue to muck around in the bottom of the rabbit hole labeled "Paul Kammerer, Lamarckism, and the history of science".
These authors think he probably did fake his results. One point of evidence: he acted as if his European cave salamanders were reproducing once every year. He got away with this in the 1910s and 1920s, when nobody really knew much about P.Anguinus. Research done during the second half of the 20th century shows that these salamanders reproduce on average once every 12.5 years - something that works for them because they live extraordinarily long lives for salamanders.
Last week I was bringing plants inside when I discovered two Red-backed Salamanders hanging out under one of the saucers.
Which isn’t too odd except that one of them was a yellow morph. Of the hundreds I’ve monitored over the years I’d estimate that 60% were the “gray” morph, 40% were the “red” morph, and only a handful were yellow or another color.
I’ve never found a Red and Yellow morph together! I quickly examined both before putting their “roof” back over them.
I started a little series of drawings of Primarchs in the traditional clothing of their adopted homeworlds.
First two were Vulkan and Lorgar. I was asked to do Curze and Lion, too. But also kind of want to do Fulgrim with some Ruhrgebiets-chic.

This episode of Just About Tabletop Standard is all about painting the Salamanders — one of the poster boys of the new edition of The Horus Heresy!

How to Spot 6 Amazing Salamanders Living in Houston, Texas
Houston's wetlands and temporary pools harbor some of Texas's most elusive amphibians. While salamanders often lead secretive lives underground, down in the mud, and underwater, making them an underappreciated and overlooked group, the greater Houston area provides critical habitat for six distinct species that showcase remarkable adaptations to southeastern Texas ecosystems. You'll discover species that breathe through their skin, others that spend their entire lives underwater, and some […]I started working on Vulkan and his base.
The Primarch of the Eighteenth isn't glued to the base, yet. I will paint him (and his drakescale cloak, not pictured) separately.
But that's how the landscape will look.
I am unsure about how I will balance green and gold in his armour. Maybe inspiration will strike today, so I can start the metal parts tomorrow. 😊

Types of Salamanders in Utah That Actually Thrive in Desert Conditions
You might be surprised to learn that Utah’s harsh desert landscape supports salamander populations, but these remarkable amphibians have adapted to survive in conditions that would challenge most of their moisture-loving relatives.

Occasionally I lift up the bar in the #paludarium to make sure the #salamanders I raised from eggs are doing okay... I don't know how they find the fruitflies to eat when they're always buried under things, but they seem to be doing well. And they're so cute!
