A deep blue cloudless desert sky. Pale beige sand dunes showing the tracks of many small animals. A large green leafy shrub to our left, 2 more atop a dune ahead in the near distance. Rugged dark gray naked rock mountains rise from the edge of the valley floor beyond.

Here, time slows down, and every step on the soft sand reminds you that beauty can be raw, silent, and absolute.

Grass and shrub covered sand dunes, Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, March 1984.

A break in the rain on a stormy day. We are in bright sunshine although the sky remains mostly cloudy. We are walking a trail towards the nearby ocean. Grasses and leafy shoots are growing from the sand around us. Grass and shrub-covered dunes rise above us nearby. We catch a glimpse of more barren sand dunes beyond them, then a strip of evergreen forest on the horizon.

Into the Distance

The raw power of the last storm left its mark on the coastline in ways that words alone can’t capture. One wave barrier along the beach had been half-buried in sand, transforming the landscape into something entirely new. Behind the sand, seawater was trapped, forming a wide temporary lagoon. It’s a reminder of how coastlines are constantly reshaped—new land created in mere hours by natural forces that would take humans days of heavy labor to replicate. And just as quickly as it appears, nature can undo her own work with the next storm.

Standing at the far end of the wave breakers, I was struck by the illusion of infinity. The long row of wooden posts stretched out toward the horizon, now divided by the sudden dune as if the sea itself had been cut in two. It felt both surreal and epic, a fleeting sculpture carved by wind, waves, and time.

Scenes like these remind us that the shore is alive—never fixed, always shifting. Every tide, every storm, every grain of sand tells a part of the story. We are just lucky enough to be there to witness it.

Taken with my Canon 5DsR (51 megapixels) and Sigma ART 24/70mm lens.

We are standing near the top of slightly pinkish beige sand dunes along the Pacific coast of Oregon. A small bump in the sand is covered with a clump of green and golden brown grasses. The sky is a deep blue with fluffy white clouds.

The past week I’ve been outside a lot, though my energy hasn’t always matched my ambitions. Depression has a way of slowing everything down, even the things you love. Reviewing my photos took longer than expected, but today I’m sharing a few from the Loonse en Drunense Duinen—a landscape where sand moves like water, shaped by the wind and light.

Most of these images were taken during sunset with the Canon R5 paired to my older Canon EF-S 15–85mm f/3.5–5.6 lens. The mirrorless R5 brings amazing advantages—sharp autofocus, high resolution, silent shooting—but it also has drawbacks compared to my DSLRs. At its price, every strength and weakness matters. I’m still weighing whether it’s the right step forward.

The last photo is something special: the Japanese Gentian (Gentiana scabra), or Blue Heart. I captured it with the Canon 5D Mark III and the MP-E 65mm Super Macro, a unique lens capable of up to 5x life-size magnification. At this scale, the flower becomes a world of intricate detail—textures and colors most people will never see with the naked eye.

Some days I walk with a camera, other days just with my thoughts. Either way, being out there helps.

What Makes a Dune?

Wind and water can form sandy ripples in a matter of minutes. Most will be erased, but some can grow to meter-scale and beyond. What distinguishes these two fates? Researchers used a laser scanner to measure early dune growth in the Namib Desert to see. They found that the underlying surface played a big role in whether sand gathered or disappeared from a given spot. Surfaces like gravel, rock, or moistened sand were better for starting a dune than loose sand was. Each of these surface types affected how much sand the wind could carry off, as well as whether grains bounced or stuck where they landed. Every trapped sand grain made the surface a little rougher, increasing the chances of trapping the next sand grain. Over time, the gathering sand forms a bump that affects the wind flow nearby, further shaping the proto-dune. As long as the wind isn’t strong enough to scour the surface clean, it will keep gathering sand as the process continues. (Image credit: M. Gheidarlou; research credit: C. Rambert et al.; via Eos)
