This image shows the Dugald Stewart Monument, which is a memorial to the Scottish philosopher Dugald Stewart (1753–1828). It is situated on Calton Hill overlooking the city of Edinburgh, Scotland. The monument features a circular temple design, styled in a Neoclassical manner, based on the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates in Athens. This setting offers a panoramic view over the city, encompassing both its historic and more modern parts, nestled amid the natural landscapes surrounding it. The monument and its location are popular for providing one of the iconic vistas of Edinburgh, blending cultural heritage and natural beauty.

The Royal Mile runs between two significant locations in the royal history of Scotland: Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace. The name derives from it being the traditional processional route of monarchs, with a total length of approximately one Scots mile, a now obsolete measurement measuring 1.81km and definitely worth a visit!

This image captures a bustling street scene in what appears to be Edinburgh, Scotland. The architecture and the visible landmarks, such as the distinctive tower on the left resembling the Camera Obscura and World of Illusions, and the historic Gothic spire of the Hub on the right which is a key part of the city's skyline, suggest it's taken on or near the Royal Mile. This location is famous for its historical and cultural significance in the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town.

The street is paved with cobblestones and lined with traditional, multi-story stone buildings displaying a variety of flags. In the foreground, numerous tourists and locals are seen walking and perhaps shopping or exploring the area. The weather is sunny, casting sharp shadows and contributing to the vivid atmosphere of what looks like a busy day in the city.

FEATHRUARY 2025

Prompt 12: Solitary
-> Solitary Sandpiper

I mean, "solitary" is already in the name! And as the name suggests, this birb likes to be left alone and tends to get quite aggressive when somebirdy tries to disturb its solitary peace (understandable). Groups of more than three of these birbs are very rarely seen.

During mating season, two solitary sandpipers begrudgingly join a monogamous partnership for a short period of time. After the eggs are laid, the parents take turns breeding them for 22 to 24 days and after 18 to 21 more days, the fledglings leave the nest and everyone goes their merry way.

FUN FACT
The solitary sandpiper is found across Alaska and Canada; however, it is a migratory bird who winters in the Carribbean, so I decided to give it a tropical holiday background, lol.

Edinburg contains many gems and whether being a Christian or not, the flair of churches and relicts always has a certain attraction. Around the Scottish Episcopal Church at Prince Street I found this Celtic cross reminding on past times where these symbols were more frequent, hailing from the ancient ones and times hundreds of years ago.

See more on this church hosting this relict on https://stjohns-edinburgh.org.uk/scottish-episcopal-church!

A pair of Western* Sandpipers running along the beach, pecking at small things in the sand. They’re quite small!

Thanks to a very rainy summer, some local MN cornfields have turned into mudflats which are now populated by a variety of wildly-out-of-place shorebirds.

Local killdeer are also getting in on the action.
