The smell of her hair, sandalwood and violets, tickled my nose. She was warm, and holding her was something I had been waiting for. I didn’t want to let her go even though an icy wind whistled through the open car door, so I held her closer, trying to block out the voices in the wind saying,

Veronica was not reassured. She was reminded of another promise the girl had made which had not turned out to be the truth—even if it was understandable.

Polly unbuttoned the dress and helped Veronica out of it. This was followed by the chemise, drawers, shoes and stockings. Naked and feeling vulnerable in the strange room, Veronica wrapped her arms around herself and perched on the edge of the bed while Polly fetched a leather case from the dressing room.
