Did you notice the nose on this fish? 🪚 Sawfish are among the world’s most unusual marine creatures. However, all five species are also among the most threatened animals on the planet.

Their unique saw-like head projections, known as rostra, have for decades been hacked off as “trophies” to be placed on display – with mutilated animals found as recently as 2023. This, along with fisheries exploitation and habitat loss, is contributing to the significant decline of these species.

Now, people are being asked to donate their rostra “trophies” and report sightings to researchers to save these special species… ausgeo.co/sawfishrostra

It seems I was right about #GambierdiscusToxicus being the cause of #sawfish deaths in #Florida. Not sure why they aren't announcing it (tourism?).

Scientists continue to search for answers as #Florida sawfish continue to die

By Heather Walker, Diana Reed

"The FGCU scientists said that once again, their samples showed high levels of a microscopic algae called Gambierdiscus. It is a naturally occurring toxin that is normally harmless but can be dangerous at high levels."

STOP THE SILENT EXTINCTION CRISIS BENEATH THE WAVES 🌊 🦈

Over 70% of our Earth is #ocean, yet the way we are interacting with it is deeply damaging to it and the creatures that live in it.

Without drastic action, uniquely Australian #species could disappear before we even get a chance to know them. Endangered #hammerheads will still be fished in the #GreatBarrierReef, and iconic species like #sawfish may no longer cruise our coasts and rivers.

Save Our Endangered Sharks & Rays.

What’s Killing #Endangered #Sawfish in #Florida?
Off #FloridaKeys fish — jacks, snook — swim in spirals or upside down in shallow waters of #Atlantic and #GulfofMexico. So were #stingrays and the occasional #shark. Then, endangered sawfish started dying. Scientists are racing to figure out why but have not yet figured out what is going on. They have ruled out a few potential causes, including #redtide, toxic #algalbloom that has led to past kills.

Six rare #sawfish deaths in 7 days have scientists baffled amid bizarre #Florida fish behavior

“There is no concrete, conclusive proof of what is happening yet and that is still to be determined, which is quite terrifying.” said Gregg Furstenwerth, a lifelong diver in the Florida Keys. “If it continues, it is going to be the end of this #ecosystem as we know it.”

"Most tests for toxins have been negative, but scientists have seen an unusually high number of #algae called gambierdiscus that can produce a wide variety of #neurotoxins that can be harmful to fish and dangerous to humans.

#Gambierdiscus is normally found in tropical and subtropical waters all around the world, but the algae can grow quickly when waters are warmer than usual. The climate crisis has brought record hot temperatures to the waters around southern Florida."

Fish are dying in the #FloridaKeys. Scientists are getting closer to finding out why

By Heather Walker

"The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission says 27 species are now affected, primarily in the lower keys from #BigPine to #KeyWest, including the critically #endangered smalltooth #sawfish. Many have grounded themselves. As of last week, 20 have died."

Endangered smalltooth , marine creatures virtually unchanged for millions of years, are exhibiting erratic spinning behavior and dying in unusual numbers in waters. Federal and state wildlife agencies are beginning an effort to rescue and rehabilitate sawfish to find out why.

We cannot afford to delay any longer.

Let's stand together, because saving #sawfish and #RiverSharks means healthier NT #waters that so many people depend on for work, play and culture.

On behalf of the sawfish and river sharks, thank you.

The #NTGovernment has the ability to improve the environmental #sustainability of the commercial barra fishery and the time is now.

There are several solutions that the NT Government must implement now.

Solutions to save #sawfish and #RiverSharks in the #NTBarramundiFishery:

- Protect critical habitats in coastal waters of #VanDiemensGulf and the southern part of the #GulfOfCarpentaria;

- Buy back #GillnetLicences to take into account the loss of important fishing grounds

SAVING SAWFISH & SPEARTOOTH SHARKS 🦈

#NorthernTerritory (NT) waters make up the last global stronghold for endangered #sawfish and one of the world's rarest shark species, the #RiverShark. Four of the world's five sawfish species and two of the world's five river shark species call NT waters home.

Right now, sawfish and river sharks are not protected from commercial #gillnets in their #CriticalHabitat along the coastlines of major river systems in the NT.
