On This Day 21st October 2025.

Scottish Punk band Nerve, on stage at Academy 2, Manchester, 21st October 2001.

A man with slightly spiky brown hair, wearing a brown t-shirt over a long-sleeved white t-shirt and a blue pair of jeans, playing a black electric guitar attached to a black strap slung over his left shoulder.
He is leaning out over the crowd, his face covered in a massive grin.
The heads of several people can be seen at the bottom of the image, mostly watching the band intently.
In the background, a man wearing a black shirt and black pants can be seen playing a brown and white bass guitar on the right of the frame, next to a rack of black amplifiers, a microphone on a stand in front of him.
A massive drum rig is in the background on the left, under a red stage light.
Black walls at the back of the stage complete the image.

Big Country were my band in the eighties.
I don't think any song's lyrics hit me quite as hard to this day as
Chance.

"He came like a hero from the factory floor
With the sun and moon as gifts
But the only son you ever saw
Were the two he left you with.."

Man.

RIP, Stuart Adamson. Your music had a tremendous impact on this kid from Shreveport, Louisiana.

The prompt is #Quiet

The Beta Band, “Quiet” from “Hot Shots II,” 2001

#TheBetaBand are from Scotland, purveying kind of clattery #psychedelic music with a #LoFi aesthetic, but when at its best, with some groove - which I think this track demonstrates nicely.

They disbanded in 2004 but I see now that they’ve just reunited for a tour, so hurry out and get those tickets, kids!

This week's #MusicWomenWednesday is one I can't stop listening to these last few days. I usually like to wait until a record is out and I've heard all of it, but these three preview tracks are so damn good, I wanted to share.

Glasgow's CLOTH is twins Rachael & Paul Swinton and their songs are incredibly great. Minimal, melodies galore. A new find for me this year (they have another cool LP from 2023).

LP 'Pink Silence' is out fully in less than a month, on April 25.

Strawberry Switchblade were cover stars of No 1 magazine 40 years ago today, 23 March 1985. The interview touched on Jill's agoraphobia & the culture shock of moving to London from Glasgow, with photos of them around St Paul's Cathedral.

Continuing a week of posts celebrating the 40th anniversary of Strawberry Switchblade's Let Her Go, here's Jill Bryson's acoustic home demo.

Like most Strawberry Switchblade songs, Let Her Go was written on guitar. Jill wrote the music and a basic vocal meody, Rose refined the melody & added lyrics.

To mark the 40th anniversary of Strawberry Switchblade's single Let Her Go, every day this week we'll be posting content to do with the song. Here's the full-page ad placed in the UK music press - 'from the girls that know'.

On this day 40 years ago Strawberry Switchblade recorded their final BBC radio session, for John Peel. With Since Yesterday in the top 10 & the album imminent, you'd have thought they'd be showcasing some of its songs. Instead, they recorded 4 new tracks 🧵

It's the only studio recording by the band in its all-female indie guitar quartet format. It was simultaneously the first new Strawberry Switchblade release in over 30 years, & also their earliest recording ever to be released.

The EP has three songs, Trees & Flowers, Go Away (aka Seaside), and Spanish Song (aka Don't Go). Spanish Song was one of the few early songs that were never rerecorded by the duo.
