#scuttlebutt
Has #Scuttlebutt #SSB #SecureScuttlebutt already solved the infinite storage problem? Or does it still use a forever growing blockchain?
I wish I had #fediverse (#mastodon #pleroma #akkoma #friendica #hubzilla #iceshrimp #snac #lemmy #mbin #kbin #piefed ) #client , I mean like #ELK #lmst #pl-fe #phanpy #tooty #sengi #pinafore #halcyon . That would allow me to sort my subscription feed & browse sorted feed, to see ONLY relevant posts (on topic updates follow-up's?).
Well, the mastodon feature of "LISTS" tries something similiar by allowing to make a sorted list of people\subscription, sorted by your custom category/topic. But it doesn't include #tags. Each #tag must be browsed separately, individually, manually, and there is no feature of list of tags in mastodon.
Lemmy, mbin, kbin, piefed and other #reddit #forum like #activitypub implementations allow you to have topics-threads, but each thread does not replicate very well across multiple servers/instances. Can't be easely crossposted ( by pinging multiple category-bots). And doesn't replicate & easily-searchable as classic mastodon #tags.
Other things I don't like:
- twitter like reposts. they make you feel you subscribed not to the original "reposter" friend, but to "reposted content" that you never subscribed for. the #f2f p2p architecture of #scuttlebot (#scuttlebutt) kinda eliminates that, they don't have nor show reposts. you see there only original posts, original content, of friends you follow. Kinda helps to slow down the mind from informational overflow. You can opt out to see posts of friend's friends, if you want more. Tags are also supported there.
- threads consist only of information aggretator url sharing in reddit like clones. Without having OP OC like in bbs|AgoraRoad , they just silo you to clickbait to other web sites.
!fediverse@piefed.social @fediverse
Anyone here got any insight into what's happening in the Scuttle-verse? Got any answers to the questions I was asking a year ago.
@powersource yeah, I'm not talking about switching 🙂 I'm talking about backup resilient comms infrastructure. (And knowing you, maybe you're talking about #Scuttlebutt when you're talking about "switching", so 100% good point there with equivalence to #Keet- both are DHT-based handshake protocols that end in gossip peering; and one is OSS but the other is not.)
@dbread @ticho @delta @torproject you mean #ScuttleButt, that #PostPrivacy #Web3 #shitshow?
just installed patchwork to try scuttlebutt, anyone there?
my home server https://aus.social has been inaccessible and returned 502 error for whole evening \ many hours.
I have not seen any 24h upfront notifications about scheduled maintenance. I have not seen a "server on maintenance" page. This left me wonder.
No one advertised here an "X/twitter or other status/downtime/uptime page of a server" .
There is no https://status.aus.social or aus.social/status
Whole situation has been made weirder by https://isup.me which checks for downtime, and "thinks" 502 is normal return code page, marks site as working fine.
So, what exactly happened & what was that maintenance, in technical details?
Is aus.social hosted on single server hardware/vps, because if there was a second server for load balancing - there probably wouldn't be such issue.
Should we expect this situation to repeat?
What is recomended official status page\downtime checker? (that is not hosted on this server and will be accessible in case of downtime)
There is no known contact form with Admin, like IRC\XMPP, outside of Fediverse.
Is server maintained by single person or team or public organisation ?
Also, if it's single person, WHO IS exactly the Admin ?
because this server is advertised and suggested as trusted and reliable on joinmastodon.org , that supposed to communicate to users upfront on any issues.
Also, if you are not on aus.social, but anywhere on fediverse, this is example of how this #fediverse #activitypub is still centralized around single points of failures like DNS, central servers. So my few suggestions to you as user (outside of this issue): Bring your own Server. #Selfhost. You can selfhost static pages for free with #indieweb & activitypub support. Add #hyphanet #scuttlebutt #zeronet keyoxide keybase.io PGP GPG blockchains etherium #p2p #ipfs OrbitDB tox bitmessage jami briar Namecoin http://pubky.tech http://keychat.io to your stack.
@heathenstorm
#p2p #f2f based social things worth checking out.
like #scuttlebutt #freenet #hyphanet #zeronet #retroshare
to liberate users from server slavery
Found out that http://scuttlebot.io is offline .
It was a great documentation site for #Scuttlebutt .
Bring it back.

@danielquinn
Do you want to work on it? (optionally together?) Co-op, or I don't mind if you prefer solo.
Are you looking at https://github.com/pferreir/pyssb or something else?
You coud be looking at the wrong place.
There are out dated, archived implementations of clients. In python, & Js .
But there are also clients that are up-to-date and work.
What is your OS? do you want to develop your own client, continue development of python one, or just use any client to connect with people?
SSB network is alive, and I've seen few people use it. It just need more love.
PS:
And in case if you'll give up on #scuttlebutt for some reason, deciding not to use it, there is #Retroshare #Hyphanet #Freenet

> Each server still has a personality, is responsible for some types of moderation and helps community to form (I heard that Nostr also moves in that direction with its relays).
yeah in nostr they call them relays. most of which are provided by nameless entities, few provided by named individuals.
Advanced nostr users, client developers, relay developers already expressed dissatisfaction with built in limitations of nostr protocol
(like for example, afaik both nostr-relay wss:// & activitypub REQUIRE valid domain name + SSL certificate is a must)
ActivityPub could in theory just use ipv4 or ipv6 address directly without SSL, but it is not allowed by protocol specification.
In nostr there is no relay discoverability. It is not broadcast network. Poor flood protections. No good peer\friend discoverability. and so on & much more, obstacles.
So advanced nostriches already began to work on nostr successors, enabling gossip protocol & dht in nostr clients.
Also one client publishing personal data to many relays without control, guarantees to clean own data - is privacy nightmare.
My post is a call not to repeat nostr mistakes, solve them.
>You can even write activities to a USB drive and then give it to your peer
that's more like sneakernet #scuttlebutt (& Co, & similiar f2f projects) (In this case I usually ask why not just work on them instead)
Are there any #Python nerds out there who have done work with #Scuttlebutt? There are a bunch of libraries in PyPI, but they all appear to be abandonware. Was the protocol abandoned entirely or am I just not looking in the right place?
