This Is A Colour Wildlife Photo In Landscape Format. In The Upper Right Corner And Filling Most Of That Quarter Is An Adult Leopard Seal (Hydrurga Leptonyx), Sometimes Called A Sea Leopard. An Apex Predator In The Antarctic Only Bettered By The Orca. The Seal Is Resting On Some Broken Sea Ice (Bergy Bits). The Seal's Body Is Aligned Towards The Camera But The Head Is Turned Ninety Degrees To The Left. The Seal Has A Reptilian Look To It With A Pointed And Streamlined Head And Smooth Sleek Body, With Only The Flippers And Tail Interrupting The Smooth Surface. The Upper Parts Are A Dark Grey With The Lower Parts A Lighter Shade Of Grey With Numerous Small Dark Spots. This Seal Has A Long Scar On The Top Of The Body Stretching From The Left Eye To Nearly The Tail. The Sea Ice Surrounding The Seal Has A Light Blue Tint To It With The Water Visible Between The Cracks Having A Light Turquoise Colour.
The Location: The Southern Ocean Adjacent To Anvers Island, 65º South, In Antarctica.

Look who came to see us off as we descended the steps to the boat leaving #Skomer Island on Sunday! A Common #Seal (Phoca vitulina), who seemed to be fascinated by us landlubbers. We of course were delighted to see and photograph this marvellous marine #Mammal.

Photo of a Common (or Harbour) Seal in the sea next to Skomer Island. The animal is in a vertical position in the water, with his or her head above the surface. The head is round, with a relatively short muzzle bearing a dozen or so thick, white whiskers on each side. More whiskers (shorter in length and just two or three in number) can be seen above each of the large, black eyes. Below the water the top half of the seal’s body can be seen, with a flipper on each side. The skin is largely grey in colour with hints of pink or brown in places; it is darker on the nose and on the top of the head, and paler on the undersides of the flippers. At the bottom right corner of the image is a dark shape – a rocky projection at the bottom of the cliff.
