Er was eens een hechte vriendengroep – jong, ambitieus, slim en aantrekkelijk (denk aan Donna Tartts roman The Secret History en je krijgt een aardig beeld). Tijdens het eerste jaar op de universiteit blijkt verkeren in elkaars gezelschap zo idyllisch dat de groep besluit gezamenlijk een huis te huren. Aan het begin van het tweede studiejaar vraagt een meisje uit de groep of haar vader wegens persoonlijke omstandigheden tijdelijk op de bank in de woonkamer kan slapen. Geen probleem, zegt de groep. Luttele maanden later is het halve huis onderdeel van een sekte.
Het subgenre der cultdocumentaires raakt steeds verder verzadigd, maar Stolen Youth steekt boven het maaiveld uit. Middels een sappige spanningsboog brengt dit drieluik in beeld hoe hoogopgeleide studenten van het Sarah Lawrence College, even ten noorden van New York, zich in 2010 in de luren lieten leggen door Larry Ray. Deze manipulator wist via urenlange keukentafelgesprekken diep in de psyche van jonge twintigers door te dringen. Strooiend met jeugdtrauma’s en managementlingo – ‘je ouders zagen je niet staan’, ‘realiseer je innerlijke potentie’, dat werk – lokte hij zijn slachtoffers een voor een naar een appartement aan de Upper East Side.
Wat zich daar afspeelde laat zich nog het meest vergelijken met de homevideo’s uit de beruchte boerderij in Ruinerwold. Het charisma van Ray – hij was een ex-marinier die Michail Gorbatsjov persoonlijk kende, had hij hen wijsgemaakt – domineerde de rommelige flat. Dag in, dag uit werden de studenten mentaal en fysiek door Ray bespeeld, beschimpt en aangezet tot geestdodende handenarbeid. Hij kreeg iemand zover dat hij tienduizenden dollars aan niet-bestaande schade aan de inboedel vergoedde; een ander was jarenlang actief als sekswerker, omdat Ray zogenaamd geld nodig had om zich te verweren tegen verzonnen bedreigingen van de voormalige politiecommissaris van New York.
Interessant aan Stolen Youth is vooral dat de docuserie laat zien dat onderwerping aan een religieuze of seksuele leidersfiguur nauwelijks iets van doen heeft met intelligentie. (Ray slaagde er zelfs in om een studente psychiatrie met diploma’s van Harvard en Columbia vanuit Los Angeles naar de Big Apple te lokken, als de Harley Quinn voor zijn Joker-façade.) Ook heb ik niet eerder van zo dichtbij gezien hoe iemands geïndoctrineerde geest zich met veel moeite losmaakt uit een allesomvattende schijnwereld. Kijk deze documentaire en wees behoedzaam voor eenieder die zegt dat hij, en alleen hij, de waarheid in pacht heeft.

I sometimes write alternate present, but I'm happier with an alternate past. Alternate/secret/hidden histories all are the most fun to write.

I'm currently engrossed in early 1800s and 1959.

My not-a-#NaGaDeMon project, although an incomplete draft at best, is proving to be an interesting experiment in worldbuilding off MediaWiki. Tagging categories, expanding, and linking entries are the primary benefit, unsurprisingly. Admin tools have turned out to be especially helpful, e.g. Wanted Pages as a to-do list and Orphaned/Dead-end Pages are a source of inspiration for unexpected connections.

A few generations later, a granddaughter of Diana-Artio (we already discussed virginity before) appeared before a champion chosen by herself and protected by the champion of Cernunnos since she was a child. The one chosen by the latter was Merlin and, obviously, Artio's champion was Arturo. Arthur's name, the same in both English and Welsh, is actually a corruption of Asturum, as he was a distant descendant of the Asturian cohorts left behind when the Romans abandoned Britannia. He also has a certain resonance to Artio, which the goddess liked.

The meeting was arranged in a lake, where the champion was taken after breaking his sword in a fight against Sir Pellinore. Precisely the sword that he had drawn from the stone and had made him king of all Britannia. Obviously this was a ploy so that the young monarch would receive the gift that was offered to him, which was the sword Caliburn (Excálibur), which was also a corruption of an Asturian word: cabruñar. This is the act of sharpening or hammering the edge of a scythe on an anvil or a flat stone, whereby Excalibur actually means "king's sharpening". Also the act of cabruñar derived in the myth that the sword was at some point stuck in a stone. The snake shed its skin again, under Artio's guidance.

All this comes to mind because of the theme of the goddess's champions and her court hidden from her, but I am anticipating events, since now it is time to talk about the Visigoths.
