what if instead of always-on feeds, we had digital gardens?
what if media responded to weather, to light, to rest?
what if the internet could nap?

solarsocial is another seed. a theoretical framework.
it’s not just for disruption. it’s for re-rooting.

@kkarhan @delta @torproject There is also #SecureScuttleButt, but even though it's technically extremely interesting, they cannot seem to stop shooting in their own foot by being very confusing to onboard, having permanently outdated documentation, and almost impossible to find a community, unless you are ready to form your own.

It would be very cool to use for async interplanetary communication. Vernor Vinge's "Zones of Thought" book series describe a similar network on an intergalactic scale.

Trying to clean up apps on my desktop. Is SSB (Secure Scuttlebutt) dead?

I'm looking at github.com/ssbc/patchwork/rele (last release of Patchwork, in 2021)

and github.com/ssbc/patchbay/relea (last release of PatchBay, in 2019)

and manyver.se/blog/2024-04-05 (main developer of Manyverse calling it quits, in 2024)

Just wondering. I launched my version of Patchwork (3.18.1, as mentioned) and I saw some posts from last week....

A question for folks familiar with #SecureScuttlebutt :

How does joining a pub affect the visibility of my posts?

Let's say I have a friend that I follow on ssb already, and I want to sync with them over the internet. If we each join the same pub, do other members of that pub who don't follow me get to see my posts? Are there other variables at play here that I should be aware of? Thanks!

@zelf >This study explores the development and implementation of Peer-for-Peer (P4P) networks, a family of open-source, peer-to-peer, and local-first communication protocols. Rooted in the principles of complexity theory and an ontological basis in complex realism, the research examines how small, modular, and community-driven infrastructures can serve as adaptive solutions in response to ecological, social, and technological crises. Through a mixed-methods approach, including interviews with nine case studies and an in-person workshop, the study identifies design principles that enable resilience and sustainability in P4P ecosystems. Findings highlight the critical role of modularity—both technical and social—in fostering self-organization, adaptability, and mutual aid within decentralized networks. The study also introduces the concept of "nested isomorphism," revealing how the structural patterns of technical systems influence the organizational structures that develop them. P4P protocols, such as Willow, Mapeo, and Scuttlebutt, demonstrate the viability of localized and distributed communication infrastructures that prioritize user agency and digital sovereignty. These systems challenge the colonial structures of global internet infrastructure by empowering communities to build and maintain their own resilient networks. This research contributes to complexity theory by expanding the understanding of self-organizing systems and isomorphic tendencies of technical and organizational structures. The research presents a framework for designing future communication infrastructures that align with principles of sustainability and inclusivity. The implications of these findings extend to the fields of open-source development, decentralized networks, and adaptive infrastructure design, offering pathways toward a more equitable and resilient digital future.

Well shit! That sounds really interesting!

I'm trying out the based on
1. Yeaaaah... if your friends don't have it, you gotta search hard to find anyone. Btw please write you bio at least so that I'm not scared to connect with you xd
2. It should REALLY allow to just search through the network and start with proposing contacts. Otherwise, the entry point is SOOOO DAMN high. Rn the app is unusable because I can't find a legit person.

BUT I will encourage my friends to try and use it as intended xd

After Zuck & Friends recent hatespeech, I guess it is time to put even more efforts into #decentralization

Pity I dislike how expensive and chatty #activitypub protocol is. Maybe it is time for me to get back into some #SecureScuttlebutt #SSB development.

I'm curious, is there a strong #SecureScuttlebutt¹ community in #Czechia?
or for that matter, is there a strong #SSB community like, anywhere?

because ideologically speaking, I consider SSB to be far superior to Activitypub, like a strong and healthy SSB network will likely be better in many ways. but the network effect working against SSB is *so much stronger* than with the Fediverse, which is essentially the only reason I'm posting it on Mastodon and not on #Manyverse

@goofy It's funny though, because a #tagging system is what I thought of when I found the censorship system of #SecureScuttleButt to be too all-or-nothing (you can publicly or privately block a user, and that's about it; the blocking also cuts you off from the users who were reaching you through that user).
#SSB being a much more decentralized network than a federation like the fediverse, if the ability to get messages not in order was added, you could decide to hide some messages for yourself, delete, tag and stop sharing them so that other people won't get them from you and may follow your lead (without removing the ability to block bad actors altogether).

The idea of #LoRA and #sneakernets growing out of things like #SecureScuttleButt that are largely shut off from the rest of the internet is looking more and more attractive and doable everyday...

What is We Distribute, exactly? 🤔

We Distribute is a CC-licensed open media project. It serves as a people-focused tech publication, with the goal of informing and educating people about three things:

1. Decentralized Communications
2. User empowerment
3. The future of the Internet

Most of what we do involves reporting on the day-to-day developments of the #Fediverse. In fact, our articles are ActivityPub-enabled, and integrate directly into the network.

However, the Social Web / Decentralized Social movement involves far more efforts and technologies that we think are also worth reporting on: #Matrix, #XMPP, #Bluesky, #Nostr, #SecureScuttlebutt, and #Solid all bring interesting pieces to the puzzle.

Our ultimate goal is to showcase the ongoing efforts to change the shape and form of the Internet itself, at a grassroots level. Join us on this exciting journey. #WeDistribute

The main problem I have with and other programs is that I don't live in a city and cannot make connections when there are 20+ miles of air between me and the social-people

@molly0xfff
The closest thing to a working "blockchain-based social network" is , which has the issue of requiring Infinite storage to use for any length of time. I was on there for about 6 months, within which time my SSB account took up 1-2GB of my HDD with no possible way to trim old posts...

Habitat (#SecureScuttlebutt client for #HaikuOS ) currently replacing the BFS index based pseudo-database with an sqlite database as the former started choking around the 1 million file mark. Will probably start making it display posts soon

@privateger @Elizafox Both #I2P and #Veilid unfortunately make the assumption that low-latency bidirectional connections can be attained.

Which is another way to say they assume the presence of the internet.

In ideal circumstances that's great... but such circumstances cannot be guaranteed.

Meanwhile for example #NNCP, #Briar and #SSB (#SecureScuttleButt) will all still be operational without it, by #sneakernet and #snailmail if nothing else.

In little bits of free time spread out across the past year and a bit I've been writing a #SecureScuttlebutt client for #HaikuOS. It doesn't work yet but it's gradually getting closer. gitlab.com/quickdudley/habitat
