"The complaint faults the administration for targeting programs that offer '#truthful, #inclusive curricula,' as well as policies that expand access to selective educational opportunities for #BlackAmericans and foster belonging while addressing #racism in schools.

"The NAACP argues that the Department’s recent actions 'advance a misinterpretation' of federal civil rights laws and Supreme Court precedent—actions that, according to the group, violate its members’ rights to equal protection and to be free from viewpoint discrimination under the #USConstitution.

#MomsForLiberty may be new to US politics, but their strategy isn’t

The Ku Klux Klan of the 1920s had a women’s auxiliary (the #WKKK) that brought the Klan’s anti-Black, antisemitic, anti-Catholic and anti-immigrant politics to places like schools and churches.

But even the women of the WKKK were not political pathbreakers; Though White women had only just secured the right to vote in the United States, women had been mobilizing politically for decades.

Precisely because women had long been excluded from electoral politics, however, they had tended to be most active in institutions considered part of the “women’s sphere”: #schools, #churches, #charities and #settlement houses.

For the women of the WKKK, schools were central targets. As historian Kathleen Blee documents in “Women of the Klan: Racism and Gender in the 1920s,” the WKKK regularly protested schools that they felt were riddled with #Catholic and #foreign #influences.

Particularly because they were so invested in countering Catholics, the WKKK sought to secure more funding and support for public schools as counterweights to private parochial schools. But they wanted those public schools to be #segregated and #overtly #Protestant.

The #white #evangelical movement prior to 1980 was largely #supportive of #abortion #rights.

They were furious, however, when the Supreme Court #banned preacher-led #school #prayer and in the late 1970s Jimmy Carter pulled the #tax #exemptions of #segregated #schools run by white evangelicals.

Jerry #Falwell had started his “Moral Majority” in 1978 and uber-Christian Paul #Weyrich (co-founder of The Heritage Foundation and the guy who famously said, “I don’t want everybody to vote!”) signed up for the Reagan campaign.

As Donne Levy writes for George Washington University’s History News Network:

“Weyrich and Falwell realized that the tax exemption issue based on racial discrimination had limited value, but #opposing #abortion was a moral issue cutting across racial and religious lines. That was their thinking on the eve of the 1980 elections.”
