I wanted to move Sengi, Mastodon client, to the left hand side of the screen on startup. In the app Startup Applications you can add an item for Sengi with the following one-line command:
sh -c "sengi & sleep 10;wmctrl -r "sengi" -e 0,0,0,385,698"
It took me a few attempts and AFAIU you need the "&" after "sengi" so that the "sengi"-part of the command runs in the background and does not hold things up and and cause the other commands not to run. 10s sleep seems enough.

@CanvasesByPeter Understand your dilemma. I changed to my Friendica account/s as my "default fedi" last year, a few times, but eventually kept coming back to Masto, for several reasons, not necessarily only, but including:

  • could not find one with server/s in Oz or close by, that met my aspirations of being green, multi-user with at least a few hundred users, & ofc still open for rego
  • also preferred not a Merkan one
  • all the European ones i tried [servers in Germany, & Sweden?] had unacceptable latency for fetching & sending posts, & some of them had terrible unreliability / downtime
  • two of the Euro ones ran scheduled database backups etc at their 0200 or 0300, which was my 0900 or 1000, & they were unavailable / unresponsive then for 60' - 120', which was galling
  • most of my frequent interlocutors are on Masto, such that the many software differences twixt F & M actively adversely degraded the convo UX

Given my Masto already has a most useful char limit of 11K, after my latest return to Masto early this year i took a different strategy. I stopped hunting for "better" fedi platforms [ie, #Friendica, #Pleroma, #Akkoma, #Firefish, #Misskey et al], & focused on investigating potentially better browser front-ends for my Masto instance. So i tried many more than these, but the interesting ones were #Sengi, #Phanpi, & #Statuzer. Every now & then i revisit the first two, but the latter has been my fav for several months now.

Good luck.

🇬🇧 God, I love the #Sengi client for my desktop. 🩷

It's so opinionated in the best possible ways and it implements #GoToSocial better than most other clients.

The only issues I have are:

  • Doesn't remember window size so multi-column layout has to be manually restored every time the app is started
  • Awkwardly small single-line alt-text input.

Testing

Wooooow 😊 👍

@dirk @gotosocial @Codeberg Thank you for the recommendation! I personally feel like it's a little too close to the Mastodon default that I got tired of, to me.

I have been happy with my local desktop/phone apps for a while now. I use the super unique #Sengi on my desktop and – for the lack of an app with a unique interface or functionality – #Tusky on my phone.

Hey there @sengi_app!

Is there any plans for the optional statistics in the expanded status view?

The pull request implementing it is now two years old. I agree with the decision to not accept it until it's an optional setting, but has there been any development on that that I missed?

It feels like since the functionality is already there, it's not a particularly difficult task to implement it as an option. I might be misjudging the effort though.

Enjoying #Sengi a lot by the way; it's my main client. I love how opinionated and unique it is, and the post tags (thread, replies, old etc.) are such a good idea.

Been using Fedistar for a few days now. It does a lot right, but it is not good at displaying threads.

When I click on a post in Sengi, it (usually) shows me the whole thread. Fedistar sometimes does that, but usually it just shows me the post, without any replies, or the post that it's replying *to*. Sengi fails sometimes, but it's much more reliable.

I also really wish Fedistar would tag bot accounts and visually indicate whether a post has replies, like Sengi does.

I'm very happy to have #sengi to be able to queue up a bunch of posts. Makes posting regularly on the same topic so much easier.

@MsDropbear42

Not perfect (yet), yes. I'm looking for a single-column client with strong navigation capabilities, i.e. switching between lists, subscribed hashtags and other timelines should be as fast and painless as possible.

Multi-column clients like #Sengi give me the creeps (not sure whether Sengi still has these tiny rectangles at the bottom, for column selection? The ones that don't have any indicator which column they represent).

#Whalebird once looked like a promising single-column app, but its navigation column still isn't scrollable - you can't even see the full list of your lists in it, and the related bug ticket is pending since two major releases, so I have given up on it.

@katzenberger @phanpy It's very good, but still frustrates me & i keep having to change away from it. Over the past one or two months, lotsa bouncing around these; they all have good pluses, but also weaknesses that sooner or later drive me away.

  • #Mastodeck: hardcoded to 500char, no Desktop Notifications, no #SlowMode, no self-toot CWs(?)
  • #Sengi: can't resize columns, editing toots loses ALL #Markdown formatting!, quoting via Markdown gives no visual indication that text is quoted
  • #Statuzer: Likes, Boosts, Bookmarking toots in one column do NOT flow automatically to same toots in other columns til Reload
  • #Phanpy: can't globally suppress Boosts in Lists; does Notifications weirdly in a way that frequently causes me to miss newer ones that appear down the timeline & need scrolling to discover [why on earth aren't they ALL at the top???]

Started using #Sengi and the view of all my feeds is so much better and easier to navigate. You can find Sengi here if you're interested, and it's completely open-source: nicolasconstant.github.io/seng

Also, started using #sengi, but because I'm on wayland and it's an electron app I have to `sengi --ozone-platform-hint=wayland`

#Fedilab -
