The misdirections in Hitchcock’s Shadow of a Doubt are not so much red herrings as they are red flounders. Young Charley’s initial telepathic connection with her uncle disappears. Hume Cronyn’s creepy obsession with how to commit murder goes nowhere. And the waitress in the nightclub purrs “I could die for a ring like that” in front of Uncle Charley but is not seen again. But despite all this subterfuge, it’s still a brilliantly suspenseful film.
