Sonnet 075 - LXXV
So are you to my thoughts as food to life,
Or as sweet-season'd showers are to the ground;
And for the peace of you I hold such strife
As 'twixt a miser and his wealth is found.
Now proud as an enjoyer, and anon
Doubting the filching age will steal his treasure;
Now counting best to be with you alone,
Then better'd that the world may see my pleasure:
Sometime all full with feasting on your sight,
And by and by clean starved for a look;
Possessing or pursuing no delight
Save what is had, or must from you be took.
Thus do I pine and surfeit day by day,
Or gluttoning on all, or all away.

order targeting law firm Perkins Coie is unconstitutional, judge rules

US district judge Beryl Howell says order violates first, fifth and sixth amendments and permanently blocks it

“No American president has ever before issued executive orders like the one at issue,” she wrote, adding: “In purpose and effect, this action draws from a playbook as old as , who penned the phrase: ‘The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers.’”

I am overly irked by the perpetual misunderstanding and/or misapplication of the line "Now is the winter of our discontent..." from #Shakespeare 's #RichardIII.

I am a lot of fun at parties.

A federal judge has struck down U.S. President Donald Trump's executive order targeting law firm Perkins Coie, saying it “violates the Constitution and is thus null and void.” "No American President has ever before issued executive orders like the one at issue in this lawsuit targeting a prominent law firm with adverse actions to be executed by all Executive branch agencies but, in purpose and effect, this action draws from a playbook as old as Shakespeare, who penned the phrase: 'The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers,'" U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell wrote in her opinion, in which she issued a permanent injunction.

Wow

“this action draws from a playbook as old as Shakespeare, who penned the phrase: "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers." William Shakespeare, Henry VI, Part 2, act 4, sc. 2, 1. 75. When Shakespeare's character, a rebel leader intent on becoming king, see id. 1. 74, hears this suggestion, he promptly incorporates this tactic as part of his plan to assume power”

Kyle Cheney @kyledcheney.bsky.social:
JUST IN: Judge Howell rules forcefully in favor of Perkins Coie against Trump's punitive executive order, comparing him to a Shakespearean character who famously called to "kill all the lawyers" in order to amass power.

Any judge citing Shakespeare in an opinion wins the day in my book.

Screenshot from Kyle Cheney's excerpt from Judge Beryl Howell's opinion in the Perkins Coie case.

Screenshot of a legal document titled “MEMORANDUM OPINION.” The text criticizes a U.S. President’s executive order targeting a law firm, comparing the action to a tactic from Shakespeare’s Henry VI, Part 2. A highlighted passage notes the quote, “The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers,” and explains that a rebel leader in the play adopts this idea as part of a plan to seize power. The memo argues that eliminating lawyers undermines the rule of law and facilitates authoritarianism, citing a dissenting opinion from Walters v. Nat’l Ass’n of Radiation Survivors supporting this interpretation.

Duke Senior:
Sweet are the uses of adversity,
Which, like the toad, ugly and venomous,
Wears yet a precious jewel in his head;
And this our life, exempt from public haunt,
Finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks,
Sermons in stones, and good in every thing.

As you like it (act 2 scene 1 ) ( by Shakespeare) .

My nerd famliy makes me happy. This is a chat between my kid and their mother.

Background: their mother is a classicist (i.e., historian who speaks a few extra languages). The child has been in about 10 Shakespeare productions in local kids' & adult community theater. They are both capable of speaking/texting syntactically and orthographically correct Elizabethan English when they feel like it.

Sonnet 058 - LVIII
That god forbid, that made me first your slave,
I should in thought control your times of pleasure,
Or at your hand the account of hours to crave,
Being your vassal, bound to stay your leisure!
O! let me suffer, being at your beck,
The imprison'd absence of your liberty;
And patience, tame to sufferance, bide each check,
Without accusing you of injury.
Be where you list, your charter is so strong
That you yourself may privilege your time
To what you will; to you it doth belong
Yourself to pardon of self-doing crime.
I am to wait, though waiting so be hell,
Not blame your pleasure be it ill or well.

“Hume says it’s too early to discuss replacing #PeterDutton Shadow finance minister #JaneHume was asked on #ABCNews (#HateNews) Breakfast a little earlier about whether she sees shadow treasurer #AngusTaylor as a future #leader of the party.

Hume says it’s “too early” to have those conversations.

(my emphasis, "Out, damned spot!”)

Asked whether she wants to keep her finance portfolio, Hume says: “I hope so … but that is entirely up to the leader.” She adds:

#DemocracySausages are my favourite meal. If I was on #DeathRow and they asked me what my #LastMeal would be? A sausage in bread with onion and #TomatoSauce.”

A Freudian slip (#parapraxis)?

Sonnet 148 - CXLVIII
O me! what eyes hath Love put in my head,
Which have no correspondence with true sight;
Or, if they have, where is my judgment fled,
That censures falsely what they see aright?
If that be fair whereon my false eyes dote,
What means the world to say it is not so?
If it be not, then love doth well denote
Love's eye is not so true as all men's: no,
How can it? O! how can Love's eye be true,
That is so vexed with watching and with tears?
No marvel then, though I mistake my view;
The sun itself sees not, till heaven clears.
O cunning Love! with tears thou keep'st me blind,
Lest eyes well-seeing thy foul faults should find.
