Sherborne Abbey, recording an extreme weather event in 1709. I love the long s's.
At one time, when Sherborne Abbey was an abbey, the townspeople built their own church at the west end of the Abbey. Known as All Hallows, it was completed around 1360. After the dissolution of the Abbey in 1539, the abbey church became the parish church, and All Hallows was demolished in 1542. This piece of stonework is from All Hallows, and has some surviving, very colourful decoration, showing how colourful medieval churches would have been.
Nothing to do with the Wizard of Oz or ballet, these are Morris dancing shoes. They were made for George Elliott, who performed in the Sherborne Pageant of June 1905. The dance was performed by a mixed side, with a hobby horse, Robin Hood and Maid Marian. A photograph of the dancers describes it as 'A Morris Dance in the Greenwood'.
Fossilised ammonite in Sherborne Museum.
Hound Street (what a great name!), Sherborne. A blocked late medieval (?) window (sorry about the drainpipe) and a stone sign for Hannam - Printer or Painter? - 1800 and something.
