We went all the way from home in northern Ōsaka Prefecture to pick up my wife's mother in Nagoya, because she's over 85 (first photo), then we took her to a hotel in Shiga Prefecture by Nagahama Castle (third photo), and finally back to our house for a few days.

I've never seen swans in the wild in Japan, but there were many on Lake Biwa along with cormorants and innumerable ducks. Perhaps the lake was a migration point, because winter weather started the day after we left for home.

Alcatraz Island is a small island 1.25 miles offshore from San Francisco, California, United States. The island was developed in the mid-19th century with facilities for a lighthouse, a military fortification, and a military prison. In 1934, the island was converted into a federal prison, Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. The prison closed in 1963.

We went to the Tsubaki Grand Shrine (椿大神社), revered by my wife's family, in Mie Prefecture on the way to Nagoya to visit my wife's mother who is over 85. In the third photo I could immediately see that the child of about 3 couldn't make it up those rocky stairs in a kimono, while the mother was carrying a child of about 1. In Japan it's not recommended to intervene with strangers who might not want it, especially touching people, but it was only natural to spring into action. While speaking Japanese reassuringly, I strongly helped the child up the stairs and put those difficult kimono slippers back on her feet. Afterwards the little girl said "arigatou" (thank you). My wife never notices that I often help people.

台南安平樹屋

今回の台湾旅行も主目的は美味しいものを食べることではあったのですが、胃は一つしかないのでただひたすら食べ続けるわけにもいかず、お腹を空かせるために合間にちょっとした観光らしきものは一応します。その行き先の一つは台南市の西部、安平区にある安平樹屋と呼ばれるものです。

台南の中心部からはバスで30分ほど離れたところにありますが、台南のバスは台北よりも路線の密度も便数もだいぶ少ないので、事前の計画が重要です。ホテルなどの場所によってはバスよりもタクシーやUberを利用したほうが効率的かもしれません。バス停自体はすぐ近くにあるので、一旦バスに乗ってしまえばあとは楽です。ただ、私は目的の安平樹屋の外観をちゃんと調べていなかったので、目の前にあるということに気づかずちょっと大回りしてしまいました。

ここはかつてのイギリスの貿易会社、德記洋行があった場所で、その後日本統治時代に製塩会社が事務所と倉庫として利用したものになります。その倉庫部分が戦後に数十年放置されている間にガジュマルの木に飲み込まれ、建物の壁や梁だけが残って木と一体化したものとなって幻想的な姿を見せているのです。その廃墟となった倉庫の中に見学通路が立体的に構築されていて、様々な角度から見ることができるようになっています。観光スポットとして公開されたのは15年ほど前のようですが、訪問したのが午前の早めの時間だったこともあり、見学者も少なく、雰囲気を落ち着いて楽しむことができて良かったです。

この近くには安平古堡という要塞跡や、安平天后宮という廟、安平老街などの見所も集まっているので、あわせて楽しんでみるといいのではないでしょうか。ただ、私たちは近くで豆花を食べて一休みした後、また中心部の方へ戻ってしまいましたが。
