I saw this meme today, where an American spy is found out because of his non-German hand gesture.
The usual Swedish way of showing the number 3 is the same as the German one. I, however, use the same fingers as in the picture but reversed: I have the back of the hand towards the other person. The reason is that this is the sign for 3 in Swedish Sign Language.
Golly-gee, I'm sorry if having a #signlanguage interpreter doesn't fit with the "image" you want to project.
I'm even more sorry that the image *that* projects is of an #entitled, #ableist asshole.

One of our sons is losing his hearing, so now I can add learning British Sign Language to my polyglot life. 😂
Some of the signs are really sensible.
Horse for example is basically “G G” created by holding the letter G and moving the fists in a vertical circle twice (Young English children call a horse a GeeGee, prounced as hard G, or J’s).
Rabbit is the bunny ears on topof your head.
Fish is a swimming motion sideways with one flat hand.
Taking it slowly, but it’s fun so far. 😇

Plains Indian Sign Language (PISL), określany jako Hand Talk przez jego użytkowników, jest językiem obecnie zagrożonym zapomnieniem, a kiedyś miał nawet 110 tyś użytkowników - g/Głuchych i słyszących. [1]
Dawniej używano go wśród słyszących masowo, szczególnie w sytuacjach kontaktu między narodami Ameryki Południowej. Obejmowało to przeważnie handel czy dyplomację. [1]
Nie wiem czy to prawda, ale podobno przeprowadzono nawet eksperyment, w którym przetłumaczono spisany w amerykańskim regulamin na PISL, a potem z powrotem na pisany i nie było większych różnic. Jeśli to prawda to mamy dodatkowy przykład świadczący conajmniej o tym, że język ten nie był prymitywnym użyciem paru znaków.
Jak to zwykle bywa, europejska kolonizacja doprowadziła do drastycznego spadku użytkowników PISL. Na szczęście g/Głusi rdzenni mieszkańcy Ameryk używają go wciąż na codzień, a nawet wśród słysząych użytkowników 37 oralnych języków udokumentowano używanie owego Hand Talk (osoby te były rozproszone na terenie 2.6 miliona km²). [1]
Patrząc na naturę PISL, widzę czemu tak chętnie wciąż używany jest przez słyszącą Starszyznę podczas opowieści, wypowiedzi czy rozmaitych ceremonii. [1]
Ułatwia on zrozumienie przekazu a nawet go znacząco urozmaica poprzez malowanie obrazów i wydarzeń za pomocą ruchu rąk. Może to stąd wzięły się słynne teatralne gesty przy ogniskach "indian" w bajkach? Śmieszne jak się okaże, że było to inspiracją ówczesnej marnej gestykulacji, która jest tak wysoko teraz ceniona na TedTalkach, debatach politycznych i wystąpieniach. g/Głusi robią to o wiele lepiej. Uczcie się.
Użytkowników tego języka jest coraz mniej, ale wiele osób prowadzi projekty w celu jego udokumentowania i ocalenia od zapomnienia.

I never thought I would ever learn even a few words of sign language. One of the songs for the Atlanta Gay Men's Chorus Holiday Concert this weekend is Stille Nacht (Silent Night) with the American Sign Language displayed by all performers while singing. It is really beautiful.
