#simplemobiletools

I'm really slow off the mark sometimes.

Soon after I got my first Android device in 2022 and installed F-Droid, I started finding apps from;

simplemobiletools.com/

They were so easy and pleasant to use that I promoted them here, encouraging anyone using using them to donate to the developer, Tibor Kaputa. I even considered buying the Simple Phone he was selling;

@mxfraud i like the Neo Launcher and the Shade Launcher, but if you're looking for something simpler, the #Fossify launcher would definitely be good too (fork of #SimpleMobileTools): f-droid.org/en/packages/org.fo…

Wow, looks like someone picked up the ball with #SimpleMobileTools — a decent suite of Android apps:
fossify.org/about/
(And they are using fscking WebPee images on their website! 🤬 Well, what did I expect, they are Android app developers, once you dabble in cancer, you might as well go all the way)

Today #freesoftware let me down.
I just ran into a bug on my phone while trying to call emergency services.
I'm running the #microg build of #LineageOS on my #fairphone3 and am using the #simplemobiletools Dialer app. After calling 110 (German emergency services), the phone app kept crashing in a loop.

Software has bugs and I'm not blaming the developers, but if bugs happen in such critical situations, it is not acceptable :(
Who do I need to give money to to prevent such things in future?

@FrugalGamer
#SimpleMobileTools was long taken over by some other company. Please don't install any of their Apps, even from #F-droid. They no longer maintain those apps. Alternatively, you can install it's fork, available on #F-droid, called #fossify Apps.

So schreckt man potenzielle Helfer ab 😭

Remember the "Simple Mobile Tools" suite of Android apps? It used to be a great collection of basic apps that didn't slurp up your data, clog up your apps with advertising, or charge exorbitant prices. It isn't anymore.

At the end of 2023, the suite was sold to ZipoApps, who proceeded to do all of those things. (This appears to be their business model: buy an app with a large install base and squeeze every last bit of monetization out of it while destroying its usefulness, fun, and credibility.)

Seriously: They replaced the $2.99 one-time payment for the Pro version of Calendar with a $15/week subscription.

Fortunately the apps were all GPL, and there's a complete fork called Fossify. They're still slowly rolling apps out to F-Droid and Google Play, with about 10 out so far.

I use the calendar and contacts apps all the time, and the voice recorder is good for taking quick notes. I've also used the files, gallery and music player apps occasionally, but not enough to have a solid impression of them, and I haven't yet tried the phone or SMS apps.

Android's "Simple Mobile Tools* may be effectively discontinued (after being bought out my a marking company), but Fossify is alive and well.

@Cyb3rrunn3r @reticuleena #Simplemobiletools° sind das nicht die, die an ZipoApps verkauft wurden?

#SimpleMobileTools has really gone.
The new owner changed the free version apps' icon, make all of them closed source, have ads, and track you, while abandoned the paid version.
I still remember on their blog that why their apps is superior and will never collect your data, will always be FOSS. Now they removed their blog website so it's not like they forgot.

Fossify is a continuation of the "simple Mobile Tools" suite which recently was sold to ZipApps who then promptly ruined them all.

One of the devs who originally worked on Simple Mobile Tools has forked the code, and released it under the name Fossify.

The tools are available on F-Droid, Google Play or directly from their GitHub repo
