It’s adorable seeing NYTimes interleave conversations with folks at the #Snohomish River, right snug along the northeast of the Seattle metro, with folks along the #Skagit, up 75km north. But I guess the distance between Boston & Providence clearly isn’t worth making clear.

From The Seattle Times.com: Live: Flooding in WA’s Skagit, Snohomish rivers prompts road closures, evacuations | The Seattle Times

Light brown area on this map marks the 100 year flood plain for the Skagit River in Washington State. #Skagit County officials have ordered everyone in that flood plain area to evacuate. Local news estimates that is around 70,000 people.

The red hash marks on the map are levees.

Zoom in on the map and you will see that most of the town of Burlington has been ordered to leave.

The river is now forecast to reach a new record high of about 38 feet at approximately 4am Friday. This at the streamgage (triangle) that is near the center of the map when it opens.

If you click a streamgage then you will see a popup. Scroll down in that popup display for 2 links to graphs with near real time water levels. Caution! The first graph is a worst case. The second graph shows probabilities that the water will get to different levels.

I don't know which tags to add to this, any other ideas?
It looks like it's going to get pretty bad around here 💔 I'm up on a tall plateau, going to be fine, but a LOT of my neighbors are not okay ☹️

If you’re in #Skagit county, you may have had trouble figuring if the flood alerts mean you need to evacuate. You need to look at skagitcounty.net/Departments/E

And if you're in the 100-Year Flood Plain, you need to leave today.

Here's the map: skagitcounty.net/GIS/Documents

Couldn't sleep and I was already planning on taking the day off, so I decided to try some bird photography on #FirIsland (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fir_Isla) in #skagit county. Fir Island usually hosts tens of thousands of snow geese every winter, plus swans and a scad of smaller birds. I saw a bunch of swans and ducks, but the geese were apparently hiding somewhere today. It's still hunting season, so I guess I don't blame them.

The weather was somewhere between "heavily overcast" and "solid mist"; not really my favorite weather for anything, but it was a quick trip, and gave me a chance to try out a new lens. I arrived at first light and hung out in the car until it was bright enough to see, and then discovered that an owl was circling through the parking lot, presumably looking for breakfast. I managed to grab a *terrible* picture of him; it was still semi-dark and my len's IS was turned off. Oh well, I never see owls, at least I have *some* proof.

"Birthday Party" teableau for 04/29/25

This painting of a Skagit Tulip Festival is by Jack Gunter, a renowned Washington State artist and filmmaker.

#Tea #Teableau #TeaCozy #TeaCosy #BlackTea #Handmade #Sewing #Crochet #TrinketBoxes #Tulips #Skagit #TulipFestival #Spring #JackGunter #Art #VintageChina

Tea tableau in front of a vibrant watercolor painting of two little girls in silhouette dancing in a field of tulips with Mt Baker in the background. The tea cozy is a tulip print, there are a lace hat and two crocheted doll dresses, a ceramic trinket box shaped like a present tied with a red bow, a gift box decorated with a birthday cake, a bouquet of tulips and daffodils, two vintage demitasse sets in sherbet colors, and two heart shapes of pressed tea leaves.

More work from the ceramic invitational at the Museum of Northwest Art in LaConner, WA. I don't usually like the type of very Junguan expressionism that Daniel Duford trades in, but I spent a good long while with this installation and I found it charming, almost nostalgic (it reminded me of so much art from the 90s, but that's just me). That coyote in the painting is going to haunt me for a while.

An art installation in a museum gallery. Three ceramic and found object sculptures contain bust-like heads, cookie-jar like vessels, and abstract volumes combined with bits of old wormy lumber and raw branches and painted fabric strips. A large painting in back seems like a scene of a junkyard or building site seen through a chain link fence, with a catholic monk, some radioactive green alien bodies in a pit, and a gargantuan coyote stalking behind.

More work from the ceramic invitational at the Museum of Northwest Art in LaConner, WA. Ariana Heinan (photo 1) makes these big ceramic and steel pieces with intensely colored but ultra-flat finishes. I've seen Holly Hudson's work (photo 2) at Seattle Art Fair; I love her playful manipulation of negative space here.

A large ceramic sculpture in an art museum. A vase like form covered with painted or glazed botanical patters, and from it emerges a flower like form made of steel stems and ceramic blooms. They are covered in the same types of patterns.A ceramic wall artwork in an art museum. Many small pieces of glazed white porcelain are arranged in a blue canvas-like panel. They make a vaguely floral pattern reminiscent of Dutch ceramic ware from previous centuries. But the forms are decidedly mire modern and playful, like a tongue in cheek reinterpretation of 19th century turkey decorative art

I spent a very rainy Sunday at the Museum of Northwest Art in LaConner, WA. The current show is an invitational of Northwest ceramic sculptors and I was especially keen on seeing these exquisite pieces by Patty Warashina. I've liked her work for years, but this is really kicking it up a notch. Look how well placed and well lit it is, too--like it was made for this spot. The show runs though May.

A ceramic and steel sculpture in a museum gallery. Several human figures with bone white skin and vaguely Asian features decorated with vivid red and black patterns are striking poses along a circular steel bench: they look vaguely like circus clowns or acrobats.A large ceramic and steel sculpture in an art museum. Ceramic figures with red and black harlequin-like patterns cavity around a circular multi-tier black steel scaffold; above them seagull like birds gather on horizontal steel arms. People and birds interact in various ways. Beyond, the shadows of the piece on the curved wall evoke a shadow okay, and above it, an existing circular skylight in the ceiling seems like it was made for the sculpture

"Tea & Tulips" teableau for 04/06/25

Bountiful tulip fields grace the Skagit Valley every spring. My cup & saucer understood the assignment, too.

Tea tableau on a rainbow stripe placemat with a sweet vintage cup and saucer ornamented with a pastel tulip pattern and a very tiny pink glass duckling. The tea is a black tea blend from Stash of Oregon called Breakfast In Paris.

From Padilla Bay to Bow then Edison, back down south to Mount Vernon and onto Conway where I had two tacos for lunch, then heading over to the tourist city of La Conner before heading up north to the start. I even saw a chicken cross the road (don’t ask me why).

This is a reminder that talking about Cute Winter Boots online doesn’t change the world. To do that, you have to meet with people in your neighborhood, city, community. You have to help people where they are, not just give them likes.

And there’s only so much you should do over public broadcast communications.

(If you’re near the #Skagit, #Whatcom or #IslandCounty areas, I may be reaching out if you don’t ping me first.)
